Must be summer, busy here
Sounds like my other half when I go to give her PW Cooper its weekly bath. "It's not even dirty. You're just wasting your time".
Trust me, it's dirty. Even if she can't see the pollen, road grime, dust, etc... I can. And it has to go !!
But yeah, the majority of car owners wouldn't know a swirl if it was on their nose. I used to be one of them.

i think we need to keep reminding folks not to look closely at their
paint because with all this talk you know they are prone to looking
at it more carefully.
and then ordering some Amigo... and some
Banana Gloss soon after.

Just took these outside:

Well they are washed, but now I'm depressed
The Cabrio looks good, but I did discover a broken fog lamp lens behind one of the covers
. Guess a rock took it out.
So that set the mood, and I started working on Poco. I got him washed, and while drying the light was perfect to see swirls, stains and what not all over him
Even on his white roof I could see swirls
.
So I guess I need to start working on them, may just pull the light bar off the Cabrio, anyone want one? But they both need a full detail. Oh well, I'll just do it over several days, then they will look great again
I don't stay bummed long

ofioliti, this is what we mean by most car owners are happy with a clean car, not perfect paint. if it looks good from a distance or in photos, they're happy. Nothing wrong with that. I used to be the same way.
If you look closely at your paint in sunlight or under a bright artificial light, you'll be shocked at what you see. And knowing the way you feel about your MINI, you'll be getting a PC buffer and some good polish in no time.
I recently had my CR Cooper at work at a little informal car show. A young lady looked my car over for about 10 seconds and said, "This car is two years old ? How do you keep it looking brand new ?". I just told her "hard work", didn't go into all the steps of detailing properly. But the point is, to make a car look brand-spanking new, you have to do more than wash and wax.

But as the crowd here knows, most of our cars look a lot better than 99% of the cars on the road
I guess I should get that PC and finally slip deeper into the pit of the OCDs.
yah, when you look at the car in the morning sun and you'll see all
the imperfections in the paint. you wont be able to tell swirlage from
low lighting unless you shine a fairly bright light as CRPWJB mentioned.
i use a super white twisty flourescent bulb in a desk lamp inside my
garage and it can reveal all sorts of swirls.
the soft glowing
twisty flourescent wont show too much.
another place to check swirls is when you're at a gas station at night.
that lamp they use at those stations are very mean...
like
super sharp focus revealing freckles and zits on a girl's face.

sorry to hear about that broken lens. i went ahead andused those 3M lamp protectors on my MCS. (headlamp, marker, and
foglamp). so far so good.
when you finish off with a nice coat of wax it will be almost all gone without
using polish.

One drawback to OC detailing---you see all those imperfections and road scars.
And how about this---for my MINI's 5th birthday in September I will buy him a PC and make everyone here happy, OK?
(mine'son the way, hopefully).
yah, that sounds like an exciting b-day party for your MINI.
