what if you get a filter with an open end or a conical filter and pipe the air from the air pipe directly into the open end?

it would be like that simota filter except wouldnt it be even more breathable?

Hello everyone, I am fairly new to this forum, and I have read over this thread the best that I could, so if this question has allready been asked/answered, I am sure that I missed it somewhere in the 16 pages that I tried to read.

Anyways, is anyone still running the intake mentioned in the first post. Just removing the factory air-box and adding a filter. If so, how well has it performed over a long period of time? Any ECU/MAF issues?

Also, I have a filter that I bought for another car and didn't use (similar to the K&N's pictured) that has a inner diameter of 3"...is this what I need? If so, is this all I need?

Thanks

you are going to need the filter and possibly a 3 inch t-bolt clamp.

about the issues... i believe someone out there was having issues with the oil from the filter getting on to the MAF sensor. That can be fixed by using a special MAF cleaner or something.

The elbow has to be used to not throw offthe flow of air for the MAF

Really? This is the first I've heard of such a thing. I thought it would actually be better without the elbow due to less turbulance in the airflow.

Thanks minipete07! So either I need the proper elbow or an Alta...

Well I just had that filter laying around, so I guess I'll wait a while...besides Im still in break-in, and I want to remain in G-Stock for autocross...

I've never put a high-flow filter in a stock box before...do these help at all with power? Would they allow you to hear the psst everyone is looking for?

ive got the alta panel filter and i would say yes it does help. i ran with the stock filter a few days ago and you can tell a difference. its not like a big power boost but you can tell the flow is better.

If anybody is curious, I called Alta to price their intake in separate parts just because I wouldn't mind having their shroud (the black piece in between the filter and the elbow) but would like to save the money and buy the rest. The shroud alone was $210 and the filter alone was $80! Looks like if you want their parts you gotta just buy the intake.

Hey Engine 58 I have the tru flow and love the sounds. MINIPETE07 helped me with my set up ! I am going to leave it in I dont think you can have too much air! I do agree the sound with a 9" filter is not for everyone. As always "KEEP MOTORIN"!

Filter alone was $45 when they posted this https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ht=filter+alta Most likely they say it that way so you buy the intake.

We got hosed, Tommy...we got hosed...

Do you guys know anwhere else to buy a UNI filter or a similar one to this for a cheaper price? I'd like to go with a good quality foam filter, so if I can't find another I might just go with the ALTA filter shown above...that is, unless they want me to pay $80.

Installed mine tonight. Basically the same as th3118's setup except my filter is red. I also used Silliconeintakes.com for the reducing 90 degree bend and coupler. I used finger screw hose clamps and they worked great after a test run.

Filter housing off:

Looking down the mouth of the MAF:

I bent down the lower edge of the scopp opening to allow more airflow. It is easy if you take your time.

Looking into the scoop with the larger opening (bent sheet metal from last photo) and the red mesh I installed. I have a light back there that shows the air path better inthe next photo.

Flourescent lamp on where the airbox base is, and where the cone filter will sit. Direct shot of outsode air.

Open box showing the stock air supply opening into the box. This sits directly under the cone filter.

Spectre 9" filter. $34 at O'Reilly's. Silconeintakes 90 reducer and coupler. Finger tightening hose clamps.

Filter installed and tied down with large zip tie. It will rattle around without this.

Flourescent light on again next to the filter to show air path through scoop. Bad photo but you can see the red filter.

Took it for a spin and it really wasn't much louder. It did feel good to the butt dyno. Opening up the throttle from about 3200 RPM was a better kick in the pants than stock. I did notice the blowoff hiss! Altogether a great project for the money.

Great pictures, Jayhawk! Good to see a fellow Kansas Citian taking his car into his own hands. My car is currently at RevLine Motors at 18th and Troost getting a custom exhaust built.

ltjpunk7 -- Do you post on the KC Mini Club forum? I am gauging interest for the BMW Club DE at Heartland Park in late summer. Would love to see you out there.

Home builders of CAIs might want to check out work done years ago by Shawn Fogg for the 1.9 liter Z3. The pics in this thread are remarkably similar to those shown at this link:

Good catch. I remember the Fogg solution from my Z3 days. A little different dynamic regarding where the box is located, but similar goal in mind. The temps dropped about 25 degrees overnight and the car really came alive on the way to work this morning from a sound and butt dyno standpoint. Great growl, but not boy racer cheesy. Now I just need to rob a bank to get the downtube and exhaust upgrades.

Aluminum gutter guard from the local hardware store. Cut to size and formed around the opening. Primed and painted red. I wanted slightly larger openings but this gives pretty good flow.

Yeah, I visit there every once in awhile, but the thing is, I'm still awaiting confirmation on my account. I never got it, even after e-mailing the admins, but I can't re-sign up because it says my e-mail is in use. So I don't post.

Is it better to use a dryflow filter or one that uses oil?

I am cosidering the AEM 9" short neck filter or the spectre that is similar in size but uses oil.

Thanks
