wonder if it'll make a difference between the 3 inches filter and a 2.75

No difference at all. The Specter hose I installed came with another sleeve(about 1 1/2 inches wide, 2.75" id,3" od, which slid on the MAF perfect, and then the 3 inch hose fit on top of that. 1500 miles and runs great.

fwiw i had a 3 inch inlet filter on the maf directly, i cranked the hose clamp down, it fit, but i have a silicone piece that is 2.75" ID and it fits MUCH better and more snug.

so i did the home made CAI today. WOW! i love it. havent dont much driving since i just did it today. it feels like its a little more peppy, but the coolest part is the sound. it sounds great under hard acceleration and when shifting. great mod

You may remember I did this mod a few months back:

Name: Blueintake.jpg
Views: 158
Size: 93.1 KB

I found my filter was rubbing so bad it made a hole.
Name: Oldintake.jpg

So I bought a elbow and clamps and a joiner at www.siliconeintakes.com

1 xStainless Steel Joiner, 3.0"$7.991 xSilicone Reducer, 90° bend - 3.0" to 2.75" - Black$19.991 xT-Bolt Clamp for 3.0" Silicone Parts$2.601 xT-Bolt Clamp for 2.75" Silicone Parts $2.60

and I brought a new 9" filter at Pep Boys for $40.

Seems to fit better with no rubbing.

Has anyone gone from a homemade CAI to the ALTA? My car is on order, and I am getting together all of the parts for mods that I know I want to do right away. I'm trying to figure out how well the homemade version compares to something over $200 more expensive...

Right now I'm thinking it's either the home made or a K&N with the 90 degree elbow...

Thanks!

The 19 dollar one is a 90 degree reducer hose (3in to 2.75in). Hope that helps. I actually did the exact same mod as th3118. Also, for those who have done this mod with the 90 degree elbow, did anyone lose some torque in the lower rpms? Mine seems to be slower off the line....

I would agree......it does seem a bit less peppy off the line going from directly on the MAF to elbow.

hslee83 is right, the elbow is a reducer:

I can't say I noticed any difference in power with the elbow.

Has anyone else experience this? I was actually thinking about going back to stock, but it would be nice if I have more input from more experienced people before I decide to just take it off.

I thought using the elbow would mimic ALTA's intake design and since their dyno maps don't have any torque dropping off at the lower rpms, I wasn't expecting the lowered performance with the home-made intake. (maybe I should of spent the $300? ) Has anyone put theirs on a dyno with the homemade intake yet? Now that would be great!

Thank you!

i did the homemade CAI myself with a 90 degree elbow and a K&N filter. i personally havent noticed a loss in power in the bottom range, but i havent dynoed it either so who knows. to me it felt like theres more power in the higher RPMs . hopefully someone has dynoed the homemade setup and can shed some light for us

I changed mine from 90 degrees to coming straight off the MAS for just that reason.

does it get quieter with the 90 degree bend? i thought i would like the sound of the ricirc valve, but im actually not that fond of it... its just tooo loud and if the MINI didnt get enough attention as it is. I was even considering just selling the k&n filter since i only drove down the block before i realized it was too loud.

I'm not saying that it is less power than stock with the elbow, just less peppy than the filter straight on the MAF. It was a great increase from stock power according to the "butt dyno".

Mine did quiet down when I added the elbow, and took the filter off the MAF. I also did add a partial "box" as seen in my sig pic

Just bought the parts above. Do I need a 3.0 or 2.75 filter? AND is that inside dia or outside dia. There was some confusion in the above posts as to the size of the MAS. What size is the MAS...id...od?

Thanks!

Just want to be sure as someone above said the opposite.

the maf is 2.75... the filter is 3.0. Make sure you buy the 90 degree reducing hose from 3.0-2.75.

I see in your sig you're going from homemade CAI to Alta CAI. If you don't mind me asking....why is this?

Alta's CAI should not have any significant advantages over the homemade intake. Their intake hose, however, maintains a steady 2.75" I.D. nearly all the way to the eye of the turbo impeller. The stock intake hose tapers and, as the Bernoulli equation states, pressure decreases because velocity increases.

You could probably do even better than this by shortening the run to the impeller (either cut their hose, or the stock hose and connect directly to the MAF without a bend). This would decrease the inlet frictional pressure losses dramatically, but there may be space limitations under the hood.

My original plan was to get the Alta CAI, but I didnt have the money at the time and I really couldn't think of anything else I wanted that would fit in my price range for Christmas, so I got the CAI and Boost tubes with some other stuff(non car related) rather than just the Intercooler.lol
