CAI for R56 (home made)

Until someone comes out with something better, here is what I have done in the meantime. I used a K&N universal filter 3" opening. I also removed the hood scoop plate to open it up, but I left the factory intake hose in place.

This mod is not for everyone. You can here the blow off valve "phssst" sound very loud when you let off the gas. Personally I like it. It is certianly easy enough to change back to normal in 15 minutes.

RR56 04-29-2007 03:16 PM

tell any seat of the pants difference?

mikeg4572 04-29-2007 04:07 PM

I do. But I know how people like to see dyno sheets. It's such a quick mod that when I get it dyno'd I can put it on and off.

It really seems to rev faster. It's already hot here in AZ so I will report tonight or in the morning when I can get some cooler air.

Looks good Mike, where did you get the idea? lol You are on the cutting edge. I hope it doesn't help you too much when we race.

Any check engine light came on?

Looks great .

Did you remove the black fake grille on the hood scoop and the black heat thingy under the hood? Is that what you mean.

mikeg4572 04-29-2007 10:07 PM

Yes I did remove the fake hood scoop plate, I did not remove the heat shield/pad.

No check engine light so far.

And yes I totally got this idea myself not from Mario:roll: ....j/k....Thanks for the idea.

In the first pic, what is that orange thing that sits ontop of the accordian:confused: How many miles have you put on the car with it so far? Also, do you have the part number from K&N and/or the length of the filter itself? I might have to call them direct and get this, I love the sound of the BOV going off:thumbsup:

Congrats on being the first and taking the plunge!

Looks good Mike! I've been playing with a CAI idea, but couldn't nail down a design yet. The filter looks to have a velocity stack base, yes? The idea is very simple yet effective, just clamp a filter to the mass-air flow meter! I'd love to get the K&N part number you used and do some datalogging on it on my own MINI, if you're willing to share the # with us.

Cheers,
Ryan

Thats good thing, I hate light flashing...a front picture with the plastic removed would be nice, did you use any mesh...I would have to paint the inside of the scoop black I think I remember when I changed to CF I could see the blue, yours is grey so looks good w/o doing much.

Thank you for the response.

Mike a local speed shop has these instock. How long is the cone on yours? they have a 5" and I am sure that wont be too long but I dont want to short the intake on filter surface area

mikeg4572 04-30-2007 09:46 AM

The cone part is 5 or 6" I measured that there is at least 6" of room. You should be fine with 5". Just make sure the opening is 3".

Let me know what you think when you are done.

Klasse Act 04-30-2007 10:40 AM

a couple questions...

1. How does it sound when its just at idle? (hood opened and closed and inside the car)

2. How about when you driving down the road normal and when you get on it?

I'm going to go and get this filter this week, thanks again for taking the plunge for all of us:thumbsup:

mikeg4572 04-30-2007 10:59 AM

With "normal" driving it sounds exactly the same. When you "get on it" you can hear a slight whistle and you can DEFINATELY hear the "pshssst" sound when you let off to shift.

Put it this way. My girlfriend HATES that stuff, she did not notice when I drive normal.

Thanks for the quick response on this Mike, did you happen to find that part number? If not, I'm just going to go to the local speed shop and order a universal K&N with a 3" inlet and 5" overall length. I actually went to their site (K&N) and thought I found your filter, but it was a K&N that didn't taper like yours, it was the same size at the top and bottom. I guess that would work but I'm just going to look for what you've got anyways. BTW, I'm sure my wife isn't going to like the sound of the BOV either, oh well:lol:

mikeg4572 04-30-2007 11:23 AM

Here it is

K&N rx4990.

I can tell you that it does not look like the one in the picture. It looks better.

naruto16 04-30-2007 02:30 PM

If you open up the scoop, won't rain water get onto your engine? The sparkplugs are right there, so would there be any problems?

mikeg4572 04-30-2007 02:34 PM

I doubt it would be any worse than spraying the engine off when going to the carwash.

Fortunately I live in Arizona where it is sunny over 300 days a year.

Damn, I should've waited because I went to the local speed shop this afternoon, told the guy I needed a universal K&N that has a 3" inlet and a total of 5" length and the part number I got was RU-3580. The price was $35.00 plus tax. I guess I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

naruto16 04-30-2007 03:12 PM

hmm... still feels pretty weird tho... having water sprayed on ur engine... oh well~ I am gonna wait until someone makes something to keep the water away before I open up the scoop~

Klasse Act 04-30-2007 03:21 PM

FWIW the EVO has heat extractors right above the motor and they don't have any problems. My MCS does have the eight, little opening though but I know what your saying about taking the plate out completely though.

RR56 04-30-2007 04:02 PM

I got a Check Engine Light....dayumit

Ryephile 04-30-2007 04:10 PM

RX-4990 looks to be a good selection, being an 'x-stream' series with the top-filter elements instead of the usual rubber or metal. Where did you purchase your filter Mike?

mikeg4572 04-30-2007 04:44 PM

Believe it or not I just walked into PepBoys...lol They had one on the shelf.

RR56 04-30-2007 04:46 PM

My CEL was dur to the air meter not being plugged back up .....DERRRRR Sounds great! Not sure if its faster but it sure sounds cool.

mikeg4572 04-30-2007 04:48 PM

Yeah, the sound is definately different. Feel like I should be driving a Supra or some sort of fast and furious car....lol
