Drivetrain CAI for R56 (home made)
Dorkboy, you might wanna think about selling those, nice job
I'm sure alittle insulation could be installed to help keep down the temps. I think its great how many people have done so many different things with this mod. If you do this, just make sure the instructions are VERY complete!
Nice work, Dorkboy. You could just seal that box up and then it would really suck fresh air from the headlight tube. But the question remains, is the cone filter superior to a flat K&N set in the factory airbox if you bother to do that.

Or is there a cone filter that will fit in the factory box and proved a similar affect: Sealed box with a mass flow filter.
Did you keep the green ring from the stock airbox?
I finally got around to ditching the air box and adding an air filter. I can finally hear my turbo! But, Im not exactly satisfied. Im mulling over re-routing the MAF and filter to a location where it can get cooler air. Im not satisfied with its present location and/or creating a shroud at this point. I plan on experimenting more this weekend.
Glad to see you have your MINI back Trinity!
I got a chance to see Klasse Act's filter setup, and we concluded it needs a bracket or support in some fashion. I received my K&N xtreme velocity stacked filter [#rx-4990] tonight. I don't think I'll have time to work on this for a little bit, as my schedule has gone insane and I have a track day this weekend. When I work on the filter I'll post and let you guys know my take on it.
Cheers,
Ryan

I finally got mine on 2day. I love the sound it makes
, i think it also gives it a little more pick up but that might just be in my head lol. But i also dont like where its @ i am thinkin about playin around w/ the set up, 2 see if i can get more air. also am still milling over the idea of getting rid of plastic in the hood scoop, but am still worried about bugs and water.

my calibrated buttdyno gives it two puckered cheeks!

it is a little loud for my tastes. i'm looking at making a nice carbon fiber airbox that gets air from the scoop and quite it down a touch.
i need to do some testing with our MAXQ data acq

So I converted my air scoop into one that is fully functional. I don't know if I exactly like it, but it only cost me $4.00 so I am not too worried about it. It is stainless steel, so it will not rust. I might paint it black too.

I am working on a lexan cover for my CAI tomorrow. You know there will be photos!

Dorkboy,
Please don't take this the wrong way, but looking at your photo, your MINI's looking a bit more anthropomorphic than most cars. I envision a 3D nose ring decal through that bling bling snout on your your car. Just a thought.

Here is my set up. I ordered couple of hoses in different variations to be able to make many configurations. The best configuration was this one which can breath cold air efficiently. I`m planning to take the entrance of the hose to the scoop as close as possible but this set up seems to be ok.
I did a back-to-back yesterday when I was at Gingerman Raceway for a HPDE. After a few sessions to re-learn the track [I've been there several times so I already knew the basic track line], I noted the RPMs and MPH I was seeing at the end of each of the straighaways with the stock airbox. I then swapped in the K&N RX-4990 and took it out for a session. I noticed no difference in performance, however I could certainly hear the diverter valve and what sounded like turbulence of the air going throught the MAF [just a guess]. I left the filter on for a 2nd session, and suddenly the car felt markedly stronger. It seemed that after the ECU acclimated to the new filter, I was then seeing 6400 RPM when I was used to seeing 6100 RPM at the entrance to corner 10, and 105 MPH on the end of the back straight when earlier in the day day I was seeing 102 MPH. It seems the filter did make a noticable improvement in top-end power, especially considering the last session I did was the hottest ambient temp of the day. I did not do any datalogging, as passengers weren't allowed in the cars and I didn't want to distract myself with fumbling with it while driving. The only counter I could think of of the filter not helping is I was inadvertantly improving my cornering speeds, thus going faster regardless of the filter making an improvement.
All that said, the car has seemed to have lost it's jumpy/perky nature at lower RPM. It's either I'm hearing more noise from the filter and thus expecting more thrust, or the filter is losing power at lower RPM. I should bring it to the dyno, but it costs more to do that then buy the filter, so perhaps I'll do some around-town datalogging and see if I can see any changes with the scan-tool.

not sure what brand his is but it looks like the BMC-CDA CF box/filter.
