Drivetrain CAI for R56 (home made)

BTW I just checked the K&N site and the filter they ordered for me does have the 3" intake and its 6" overall length, just like Mikes and has minor differences in other dimensions but mine has a sealed top whereas Mike has that K&N "pleated" open look so I guess I should be ok....Ryan?

For those of you who are worried about water. Look into this.

Here's the one they ordered me when I gave them the dimensions

As your can see its just about the same filter that Mike has but I think his is going to suck up more air due to the pleats on the top of the filter, would you guys think its going to matter THAT much
Would one of you, give a n00b, who wants to start getting into modding, a step by step on how to do this. All detail is welcome!
REmoving the black hoodscoop block, and all the stuff to put the filter on.
REmoving the black hoodscoop block, and all the stuff to put the filter on.
here how you remove the hood scoop incase anyone wants it.
"unscrew the two screws on the left and right that are visible, looking from the engine-->out. Then look up at the hood, dead center, you see that plastic plug? Pull it out, underneath it is another star drive screw, you need to take that out before the hood scoop piece can come out.
once that screw is out, then lift firmly from the top of the hood while grabbing the hood scoop insert. it pops out, careful as there are little plastic
pins all around the scoop that hold it in.
then you can take the other two screws you could not get too and presto
the plastic insert comes out.
I put the screws back in so I wouldnt lose them, pressure fit the hood scoop
insert back into the hood, put that big star screw back in, put the plastic
plug back in and presto all done.
as for temperature of the engine, I dont think its hugely signifcant, but I do notice that the fan does not stay on or not as long as it use to when parking the car and turning the engine off. so its obviously helping.
but as from experience with lots of cars over the years, when driving in 115 degree texas heat, the more air flow you can get through the engine compartment the better off you are. It also reduces the heat build up
under the hood which is also good especially for all those rubber hoses and plastic pieces that are scattered all over the engine compartment.
its like anything else though, you dont have to do it if you dont want to, be skeptical all you want, but it helps, it works, and it doesnt hurt anything."

2 things,
1. are we supposed to unplug the airmeter in this process? like the problem rr56 had [mistake?][glad you got it fixed], and do we unplug anything period?
2. and does the way
that he has the elbow pointed up make any difference? good/bad?

Mike said we don't need to unplug anything and since he's the first to do this sucessfully, I'll go with what he said. BTW Mike maybe you can keep us updated on the amount of miles you've driven since doing this mod. Usually I'm "on the fence" about things like this because I don't want any CELs, but this just seems right and I'm installing mine tomorrow when I get home from work and will go out for a late night test drive to see/hear/feel the mod. Honestly if this works out and I have NO reason to think it will not, I don't see a need to buy a custom pipe to go in there down the road unless it helps perf and/or looks THAT good.
The way I figure, it is a win/win situation. I will let you guys know if I get a CEL. It is SO easy to put on and put back to stock I am hardly worried about it.
Klasse Act, I agree with you on the custom intake. If someone comes out with a system that is proven to work better I will be happy to purchase one.
But until then, the sound is fun and I swear it feels quicker.

For me this mod is ALL about the sound and gives the car even more attitude, especially mine because the exhaust has been addressed and it sounds AWESOME!!! Now the car will have the sound coming from the front AND the rear, not to mention the inbetween shifts and PSSSSSSSSSH, PSSSSSSSSSH all the time. What will the ricers have to say when they hear that, hmmm
No its not German-British rice, its the sound you hear as we're pulling away from you.....WAY, AWAY

Just for the hell of it I took the entire assembly apart to see what was involved and it was pretty easy, even for me because I'm not really that mechanically inclined but there's (4) screws that hold the housing on and another (1) down towards the bottom left. Then there's the (2) that hold it onto the MAF for a total of (7), no biggie. I'm going to go downstairs and put it back together now. I checked the other pics that were posted from undeground and although that mod to get the air directly into the K&N works, the elbow doesn't seem to fit back into place, so I'll pass on that one and besides, the engine bay is still getting the fresh air from the outside anyways. I can't wait to install this
Since I took the stock airbox out "just for the hell of it" to see what was involved there I also took the car out for a ride w/o the assembly re-installed, I just HAD to see see/hear what it was like and the answer was....AWESOME! The speedshop is only a couple miles from my house so I'm just going to leave the way it is (w/o the assembly installed) and install the open element K&N once I get there. I also took it upon myself to actually use the idea of the air inlet, but what I did was wrap it together with duct tape, yes I said duct tape and will then wrap that in electrical tape to make it more "stealth". I noticed in the pic from underground that when you flip that elbow over it doesn't line up right, thus creating some gaps, this is why I went ahead and wrapped it in duct/electrical tape. This mod will work great when the car is moving as the air will get rammed right into the K&N.

I really like the sound Mike and when the windows are up you can hear it but not like when the window(s) are down, then you REALLY can hear it
Keep in mind I'm still breaking the car in so I haven't really gotten on it! I said earlier about how I duct taped the elbow so outside air would go directly to the bottom of the K&N and I didn't want any gaps, well I thought about it and even with the elbow pointing in the original directions (towards the p/s of the engine bay) its still getting fresh air so when I get home tonight I'm going to re-install it in its original location.
For $37.10 this is a GREAT mod

The factory computer will adjust for this just like an exhaust. This is a very simple and cheap mod that everyone should do. Where else can you get power and a cool sound for $40 bucks and a 15 min install?
I sometimes wish I had an R56 but as of now I have 9k into my motor. I plan on going turob later this year (350hp) that will need some air/fuel adjustments.
