what about using new hose from the turbo inlet, moving all the sensors closer to the turbo housing and mounting an air filter near the cold air inlet
just shorten the whole system to about a foot and a half?

Murathan,

This is exactly what I planned on doing with an Apollo filter from K&N (http://knfilters.com/universal/apollo.htm), but it's pretty expensive. How much does the Simota cost?

These are the cone filer options for the kit. Different lenghts etc.

I got it from simota local dealer in Istanbul.
Can you tell us what EXACTLY you used for your setup, would be appreciated.

Simota is aprox. 150$ here. It was easy to do the process because european version of r56 has no air sensor on filter hose, Carbon fiber filter is 200mm in lenght so i had to shorten stock hose about 60mm as you can see the difference in the picture, then I connected simotas 70cm hose to stock air inlet. It fit well because it has a 90mm width needed for stock air inlet hose which is a bit wider than 70 mm . Simota hose is made of rubber supported by wires thus it is easy to form it like the way you want. Also there is a thin silicone protection on top of it for better heat insulation.

i did this mod yesterday. i had a little trouble getting the scoop out as i thought it slid out. i was afraid of breaking or snapping it so it took a little while. finally got pissed off and yanked it and it popped right out.
definately a good mod

But where can we hear a video of these home made CAI???
Can someone, for example with a k&n filter, do and post a little clip to hear the difference with stock filter?
Thanks...

k@rtm@n, honestly for the $25 and the 15 minutes it takes to do this mod. You will love it! Everybody here has tried it and it rocks! I personally love the sound, it's great.

And if you don't like it, then return the $25 filter and within an hour you will have your own results!
Good luck.

i noticed also that the filter and hose never get too hot either. there needs to be a better air snorkel that can grab more air i think

I just put in my filter and it looks great! and has enough PHSSSh to make an EVO jealous. As soon as I went for a test drive i passed a group of guys hanging out on the street They heard the BOV and my tires chirp shifting to 2nd- !You should have seen their faces! (Yeah-recirculating air valve...(but they dont kno that).
It honestly doesn't get that hot back there but I left the original pan underneath so no heat would come from below, besides holds the filter up higher for air from scoop. I spent $50 and its 6" height but looks professional - will post pics as soon as i can. I don't know why everyone is making a big deal about the air tube- as if it was a ram air from the headlight!?. Close the hood and try to see where the air gets in from. :impatient
I removed the hoodscoop plastic and unless your going over 120mph in the rain i highly doubt water is gonna move horizontally into the engine bay. But guarentee some fresh air after 30mph. But ok...in traffic idling warmer air will be going in.
And use some logic people the cooler the air = the cooler it'll be after the turbo.
FYI also replaced the turbo muffler with a pipe i painted black. This was a week prior and it improved throttle response. - I Think... if not like Alta said at least less turbulence.

One minor bad thing noone has mentioned. This mod will kick you out of GS if you autocross. =(

Of course if you don't autocross then go for it.

This might be a good time to move to SM anyway. Looks like SCCA might be moving the "S" to DS next year....

I've got it and have been switching back to the stock box when I Auto-x. It's easy to change it back and forth.

The fun is in your driving, not in the class of competition.

The problem with mods and driving in competitive classes is that it's legal to do more and more mods and remain in that class (no penalty) up to a point.

The key to being competitive is to choose those legal mods that fit that class and then develop enough skill to drive your car at it's best given the setup you have.

You can't do well without driving skill, but you can have fun anytime you want.

When installing intake it is a good idea to unplug the air censor. Also when ever installing an engine mod it is important to disconnect the neg. from the battery first and to reset your ecu after the install. You can reset your ecu by simply pressing down on the brake pedal while your neg. is disconnected from the batt. The odometer (or any readout on your dash) will fade away untill you reconnect your batt. Just a heads up after reading a posts on this thread.

I have noticed that throughout this thread (along with the title) everyone says CAI. CAI stands for cold air intake. The photos that everyone is posting is not a cold air intake, it is just a modded stock intake or a short ram intake. Cold air intake breathe in "cold" air while the intake that you guys are showing take in hot or warm air b/c it is right by the engine at the top of the e-bay near the hood. Warm air rises so its not cold air. To have a CAI, it has a long tube that runs below the engine, or at its lowest point, and most of the time they are by the front bumper or near the wheel well to take in cooler air. Im not trying to be a smart *** just thought i would share this with you guys.

^^ By the way, i wasnt trying to "**** on anyones cheerios". I know everyone likes milk better. I happened to only skip pg. 5 after reading so many and went to 7 then 8. I was just letting others know that the labeling of the intake was incorrect. If i was just learning about cars and came to this thread to pick up info on intakes, i wouldnt want to learn something incorrectly. Its kinda like the saying "practice makes perfect" although if you're practicing the incorrect thing/info then your are not doing any good are you?

What are you so hostile about? You shouldnt let little comments **** you off especially if i wasnt trying to be a d**k. I apologize if i was stepping on anyones toes.

Either way. It does help some over the stock setup and sounds very cool!

Yes when modified this intake can receive cooler air. But that technically doesn't make it a "cold air intake". A cold air intake typically has a longer pipe and its filter is positioned close to the ground where it can suck in the air that has not been heated by engine operating temps. Along with that, CAI have been noted to produce larger gains then a short ram. Although a con with the CAI is since it sits closer to the ground so it is more likely to pick up water. With any car i prefer a short ram, period. I am finicky when it comes to cars. Every detail matters to me and my vehicle. All i know is that when i make an incorrect comment, I would like to be corrected followed by an explanation.

++ I agree with mikeg4572
