Picking up R58 JCW and no boost

I'm picking up 2012 R58 JCW with only 50k miles tomorrow but the car has no boost but there is no check engine light or anything. The owner says It might need new turbo but usually if turbo fails then check engine comes on right? If it needs new turbo then I wonder if type S turbo can fit and can be used?
Also, this mini has no bushings on rear sway bar so it clunks really loud when it hits bump or something. Does it need 17mm or 18mm bushings?

Does the check engine light work?

Before you buy, connect a scan tool that reads BMW fault codes.

Make sure the exhaust is not getting clogged. This can cause low boost. A bad cat could be the problem but you should get a code for that. That is very early for a turbo to go out. The oil line to the turbo may have caused it to go out early. People get these turbo cars and don't keep the oil changed this starts causing problems like clocking the oil line.

P.S. I have a very nice one for sale

It might have ingested the intake boot inner gasket into the turbo fins enough and does not throw a CEL? . Killed the turbo. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ed-advice.html https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-question.html

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...take-pipe.html

They like to pop off also and walk off the turbo inlet.

Thats why we have this: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...e-upgrade.html

It could be the intake pipe, but I would expect the turbo to still build some boost like that.

You might want to check the turbo outlet pipe, intercooler cold side pipe, and the throttle inlet. Could also be a sticking wastegate flapper that isn't closing.

Yes The pipe from the intercooler to the intake gets very brittle. There should be some codes.

I picked up the car today and half check engine light came on. The owner said it comes on and off which was really weird because when I test drove it yesterday, CEL was off. I scanned the code and the picture shows below.
This car came with AFE high flow down pipe with cat (I believe so) and as you can see below, there is code for cat as well.

You are now pretty well informed about your new purchase. Good luck with the fixes!

The 2885 code might be something simple. Start reading up:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...rchid=21309105

A couple of possible culprits could be the diverter valve diaphragm, the rear intake manifold breather hose, the waste gate…. The underside of the car look well taken care of, so it looks to be worth the time and efforts.

@yyj3869 I highly recommend getting this scanner e you go father.

Amazon Amazon

I have one and it has more than paid for itself.
The 276A is being caused by the AFE high flow down pipe. I think that is a hi flow cat or is it cat-less? The ECU thinks the cat is bad. I have a cat-less down pipe. I would just clear the code when it came up. I installed a spark plug extender on my post cat O2 that got rid of the reassuring code.

for the other code I would check what others have suggested.

Thank you!. The previous owner sent me a picture of what he's done to it and yes it has high flow cat. I need to pass smog before transfer the title. I'm located in CA and smog here is very strict but wonder if I can pass with this aftermarket catalytic converter or do I have to swap it stock?
This car also has Spec(brand) stage 2 clutch on it but it gets really annoying when it's idling. it makes rattle noise but it disappears when I press the clutch though.

I don't know for sure if it the same. I looked up one on Outmotoring. Take a look it shows the same one covers 2007 to 2015, best to cross reference the part number before you buy.

https://www.outmotoring.com/exhaust-...ufactured.html

I think for CA it has to have CARB on it to pass. I know they are strict out there. One guys on the Lotus forum was having trouble passing because of the tune on his ECU. So he removed it and they still gave him a hard time about it. My Exige would never make it out there. You will need to find your boost problem before you get the smog done. @Maybe, maybe not gave you a good list to start with.

Yeah It seems like they are pretty much same. I just picked up one that was taken off from 2011 mini cooper s. Luckily I picked one in local at $100!. Yes I have to work on boost problem first and hopefully one of the list works out! Thank you guys!

That downpipe is a nice piece, but it won’t pass California smog:

@MCS02 @njaremka @Maybe, maybe not I feel like I found the problem. I just took off the intake manifold and guess what those two vacuum lines were connected in wrong spot.

@MCS02 Unfortunately It didn't work out... While I was putting all back together, I lost the bolt for the support bracket on the bottom.. I left it like that and went for the test drive after erasing error codes however, while I was driving 5 mins or so the same code 2885 and half check engine light popped up.. I've checked the diverter valve as well but it didn't look bad at all..
