The wave is unmistakable with the Roadster's top down. Slightly embarrassing when you're totally ignored.
It IS embarrassing any time you're ignored, although in the convertible and roadster with the top down, I'm sure it is worse still.
And the only wave returned to me in the last week or so was a yellow R56S with white stripes, early on my way to work. It made my morning... up until I had to park, and actually go into work.
Was zipping along the interstate this weekend and came across a fellow MCS who was driving windows down and sunroof open. Looked over, dude grinned, I was so excited I gave a big smile and wave! Made my day blue MCS!
The MINI Hardtop is clearly identifiable as your typical MINI. The Convertible is nearly identical in appearance. The Clubman bears noticeable similarity to the very recognizable Hardtop, the Roadster and Coupe less so because of their unique tops. Countryman and Paceman look nothing like the MINI Hardtop. I wonder if some casual MINI owners suffer brand recognition problems with certain MINI models, thereby causing them to refrain from waving. Of course, some MINI owners are wholly ignorant of the MINI culture and the wave concept. Why else would so many MINI owners blow off the wave? Can non-wavers truly be that intentionally rude?
I've even been known to see a MINI in the drive-thru at Starbucks and tell the barista I will buy their coffee so just wish them a Happy Day from the fellow MINI owner.
Clearly I need to go to more starbucks ...
Yeah I almost never get a wave back (unless it's a modified mini, but that tends to be hard to tell from the front) .. there's just so many mini owners now, but I still get excited when I see one on the road

I did a wave along with a quick "toot" here in Nashville - think I startled the woman a bit, but she then responded with an enthusiastic wave and a big grin!
I get fewer and fewer waves here in St. Louis, but I'll keep being a dork and waving -- it's part of the fun of owning a MINI.
I wave to every MINI I see (and there are a lot!) in StL but I have only gotten maybe one or 2 waves :( MINI of STL has gotta get better at telling people to wave!
So yesterday while opening the door, I spotted a red and white justa (looks exactly our 07 MC) about 100m further down. Suddenly got excited and waved with much gusto as it passes by. The lady passenger was startled like who-the-F-is-that! Didn't know if her daughter who was driving also saw the irrationality. They were also headed towards the mall parking - we were just a bimmer away at their back. Wife said stop the perversion so I parked far away from their spot. Funny thing was a bit later we suddenly realized we were walking right behind them while entering the mall. They saw us but we simply looked away
Waving always makes my day with or without response hahaha... Wife still thinks it's ridiculous

Were they talking on the phone, texting, putting on makeup, shaving, eating or reading the newspaper? Then there's absolutely no excuse to why they did WAVE!
I try to do this "chill" wave, you know, like we are the cool group because we drive minis... but the response I always get is a very exaggerated energetic wave.. be cool people be cool. :P
So I decided to go one town over for lunch today and was excited as I passed 2 mini (not together) that I haven't see around before. Since there aren't a lot of mini's around here, I always get excited when I see any. I got one almost wave (the had started to come up, then quickly dropped) and one blank stare...Oh well, I'll keep waving.
Of course I wave - all the time. Some traditions must be kept up by the faithful so the others learn it's cool to wave. I wave, I honk, I flash my lights - anything to get their attention.......around campus they're usually in a daze. Get with it people - be proud & WAVE!
I live in the largest gated community in the country, some 55 square miles, median age 67 years. I frequently meet MINIs on the road, and they invariably wave.
I've found most Arkansas MINI owners, wave, too. Actually, the classic and sports car world is quite active in this part of the world, and we're a wavin' bunch!
This thread always makes me smile. Even after all these years, I still wave (or flash lights), although it's hit or miss on the returns... ah well! Long live the MINI Wave.
I've gotten a few waves lately here in Nashville - sometimes I add a quick beep of the horn or a flash of the lights to make sure I get their attention.
I think it isnt where you live its the owner! If they truely luv their mini & appreciate other people with minis - they will wave! I always do & get a wave back most of the time
