experise in electronic products.

prove me wrong? (i even feel lucky that my griots
RO even works correctly)
So you wouldn't recommend the Griot's (big or small) if one was looking at getting a RO?

I'm thinking I'll probably end up wanting one really bad after taking a single crack at polishing/waxing by hand. But since it's something that can wait for the spring I'm going to try to catch a deal.

And speaking of PC/RO deals, what qualifies as a really good price? Is it possible to get one under $150? $100?

im pretty sure their large RO is made by hitachi...so im thinking
they will be okay. mine's been working great the last 1.5yrs.

i know their 3" one had problems during their initial release last year
and rumors are that majority of the people returned them. im not
sure wat improvements were made on this re-release. i shall ask.

i think the large RO's should be in the neighborhood of $100-150 sometimes less.
i'd consult with octaneguy. if you buy the griot's set it works great on
their own easy to use system. but if you get the PC, you have access
to a whole nother world of pads and etc. i kinda think griots as sony's
beta and pc as panasonic's vhs.

I got a brand new one on ebay for $95. Not refurbished or anything. Reasonable shipping to.

I try using the whole VHS and Beta debacle when explaining to people what the deal with HD-DVD and BluRay are, but they tend to look at me like I have two heads and three arms. And these are people who should have been alive, conscious, and consumers during that period.

I always forget eBay. I'll have to remember to check there.

I checked out Amazon, and there's a PC 7424 Random Orbit Polisher, a PC 7336 Random Orbit Sander Only and a PC 7336SP Random Orbit Sander w/ Polishing Pad. Plus a whole bunch of other random orbit hand held sanders. Do I need to be looking for a polisher, or is it just a matter of what pad you stick on it as to what function it does?

I hear that vinyl is making a come back. Although I'm sure it is 33, not the other formats of 45, 78 I still have one of those 45 inserts so they will play on a 33 spindle. I figure if we keep this up some of us will end up on some ignore lists

If I'm not mistaken, the sander model will come with a velcro back with holes in it.

No, but you don't need them for pads, just for sanding wood. I would not recommend that you buy one to be dual purpose(I'm sure you weren't).

Check on Detailers Paradise, or your choice of vendor to see about backing plates for pads.

just a warning DP's closing down for inventory for a while so
might want to check out OG or detailerwarehouse (was it?) if
you're in a rush to buy.

Yeah gee thanks for considering as second best, lol. I think I've provided some of the best customer services to NAM members, but who would have "thunk" it! lol.

As for PC's. Start with a 7424 or 7335/7336. Add a $17 velcro backing plate--the one that comes with the polisher isn't a velcro so it doesn't work with pads. Add a polishing pad--Prima White is what I include--another $10-$12. Add my PC Guard for $10 or get the OneGrip Combo Kit for $30 which is the PC Guard, OneGrip, and housing bolts--and you'll get a PC with everything already put together and ready for polishing.

The price savings on getting the cheapest one you can find, and then buying the extras isn't huge..and maybe more once you've added shipping for all the parts. Then you got customer service after the sale---you really think one of those "ebay" companies is going to help you polish your paint? LOL.

I just blew the family fortune on detailing supplies (thank you DP one day sale, Griot's, and OctaneGuy), so I'm holding off a little bit on the PC. But I'm a sucker for a deal, so I wanted to get a general feel for what an awesome deal on a random orbital polisher would be. All it's probably going to take to get me to buy one is one attempt to polish out my Dealer Installed Swirls by hand.

Is there any significant difference between the PC 7336 and 7424? I checked the Porter Cable site and they seem virtually identical. Which would be the preferred choice?

The 7336 is often bundled with things you don't need. The other difference is the counterweight. The 7424 comes with the 5" counterweight. You can buy the 6" counterweight for a couple of bucks. Some people swear it makes a difference. I can't tell. I have both polishers.

It is supposed to hit 50 here on Sunday. I can't wait to get the grime off the MINI. I find my mood is a function of how dirty my car is. Right now it is just plain crappy. It has been sub-freezing for at least three weekends. Warms up during weekday afternoons enough to make the drive home sloppy, but won't warm up enough when I'm home to allow me to get the muck off the MINI.
Wish I had a garage big enough for the MINI and the Expedition.

+1

With the water restrictions here and my insane schedule for the past month, Blimey is FILTHY - and I don't even live in the snow belt...

Gonna break the law and wash him in the morning. Bring the fines, coppers. I don't care. Gotta do it. I figure I've saved about 1000 gallons of water in the past three months - I'm gonna use a little.

One way I have cleaned the underside of the MINIs is with a sprinkler set up under them, start at one end and every 5 minutes or so move it along under the car, works great As this is going on you can be cleaning up other stuff, or sit back and enjoy your beverage of choice
