Re: What are you calling V5?

Franz calls his latest round of mappings v5. I don't think he states the version of MTH much, but sometimes he lets it slip.

using other people's maps

does anyone know if these maps are universal or designed specifically for one car? I want to use someone else's map without having to send mine back to Franz and wait a couple weeks to get it back. Can i do this without any problems or do i have to send mine back to him to get the same changes?

They're coded to your vin or reg code. I think I've read somewhere that you can edit them, but I have no clue how. What I've done is asked for several maps at once..... I've gotten about 7 all told, some didn't work out, and some aren't needed yet. The reason they didn't work out was that I ordered maps for things I was hoping to do and never did, or for things I haven't done yet

Can someone explain something to me? What is the difference between the 60 euro base map reflashand the 300 euro "tuner" map? Has anybody gotten the "tuner" map and can tell if there is any butt dyno difference?

Right at 3k there is a VERY sensative area - the program takes all the lapse out of the ngien from down reving off-throttle - and when you get in a transition point and try to hold it there - the petal is just so sensative you can occilate easily. Just don't hold at 3k and it's fine. Passing through is smooth.

You can't do that. His program pulls the VIN number in the file, and can only be used with that car.

No one has reported back yet, and he has yet to post any actual data.

In an email response, it was a claimed 15% low end torque improvement - still waiting for a dyno curve, but I don't think they will be releasing anything like that - someone will have to do it.

I would be able to do an 1/8th mile comparison and stalker 0-60 radar graphs, but I don't know of a dyno around Tampa/St. Pete to use. I think I'm going to try it when I get the final price back.

I'm also curious to know whether this "tuner file upgrade" includes what Apexi does, custom A/F mixture maps? If so, then this may turn out to be a bargain once again.

OK, the upgrade is $288. I'll probably bite when I get home and can send my files.

Having problems uploading my map - I have a Cooper S and keep getting wrong electronics error when uploading.

When I downloaded the map - I noticed that when I used the ID button it came up with R50. Shouldn't it be R53 (S) since the R50 is the cooper?
Do I need to redownload with R53 as the vehicle ID and resend to Franz?

Danka,

The ID is read from the ECU. Don't worry that it doesn't match. Upload issues like this usually have to do with the connector, serial port configuration, and computer stuff. I've had issues with the real time clock battery setting the date before the original install date of the software or whatever... I just have to remember to set the date when I boot the computer....

Whenever I get ready to upload a new file, I first do a test download of the existing ECU contents. I don't save it, it's just to make sure that the communications link is working properly.

Are you using a USB or serial cable?

I think that Franz is using information stored in the xxx.mim file (that is the smaller of the 2 files in the original pulls from your ECU) to encode the xxx.mth file that is returned to you. The VIN is stored in this file. If this is the case, then he could encode the xxx.mth file using the VIN and when the CarTune software loads this file and reads your VIN from your ECU, it can then go through its decyphering routines before uploading to your ECU.

All that to say, don't attempt to load someone else's xxx.mth file. It won't work.

Pay the man what he is due. It's money well spent.

Just my 2-cents worth.

Okay. I'll be the one to say it...

Disclaimer...I do not know this to be the case. This is hypothetical only!

I'm a programmer. I develop a package that give your car more hp & torque at the higher RPMs. However, being the smart business man that I am, I also program in some inherant loss at the lower RPM range. I sell many thousands of these packages. I then offer you a package that costs 5-times the amount of the original, that will solve this problem.

Say 2,000 units sold @ 60.00 = 120,000 euros

Now say that 50% of those who purchased the original package, purchase the upgrade.

1,000 x 300.00 = 300,000 euros

It does cause one to think, doesn't it?

I don't know about you guys, but I purchased an MTH ECU "SERVICE" with ongoing upgrades. There was no talk about another purchase level. I think that those who purchased the original SERVICE should get the tuner package for free. In other words, they should be grandfathered in. Any new purchases could be at the new pricing level, but when I purchased, I was offered new maps at no charge.

Am I missing something?

Well, they are appearantly offering this new service specifically for power/performance increases, where the 'original' is/was marketed primarily as a drivability upgrade. Of course I would like to get the new upgrade free, but I really don't see how I am legally entitled to it.
