Just needs a little Photochop

Dave, my Photochop skills have much to be desired, but just add some color and change the tint and I would never know!

It almost looks like an 89A sunset if you squint.

I've been having withdrawl sypmtoms...

...and I see why, it's been over a whole week!:impatient
I spied this location when I attended a funeral recently. I resisted the urge to slalom the light poles when leaving.

I took 45 shots tonight. Ah!...now I feel better

Off Interstate 40

Another contribution . . .

Although this was not in the direction of the sunset, it was still that magic hour.

St. Johns Grand Prix trip.

The first night had some color. I was one of a few non-participants allowed to park in the paddock (being a worker helped).

And this one is for Juan, my I-40 sunset, at Buffalo Ranch exit.

Sunrise and stuff.

Okay... it's not a sunSET.

I did take sunset shots last night... of a Mini. Stay tuned.

Am I really the only one...

...bothering to take sunset photos? It's not that hard.

Pulled as far off the beaten path to get in the weeds, some that set off my allergies something fierce.:impatient

The tricky bit is stuffing the MCS into my luggage. The bay area sunsets have been sucking like the ones from SoCal Dave B. has complained about, so that's why I've been quiet Kurt. However, to keep you pacified...

Sorry for the lack of a Mini (or bikini models ) in these, but I think these photos from Maui last week came out pretty well.

Second night sunset, hadn't explored for a ideal place yet:

Chasing after the golden hour's tail:

Next night moved ~500m from old location to include rocky tidal pools:

Wow! Awesome sunsets Dave!
I really like the colors in the third pic.

I've never been to Hawaii. Hopefully I will some day.

Speednut, these are probably dumb questions for you seasoned shooters but for us beginners ...

Can I ask what filters, lens, and approximate camera settings you used for the photos above? I am still shooting in full auto AF mode while learning my camera but I want to venture out a little in the creative modes. I just picked up an EF 75-300 lens yesterday. A cheapy, I know, but it give me more options while learning. I am going to pick up a tripod today so I can take it with me on my roadtrip along the Pacific Northwest coast. I just might find an opportunity to snap a few shots along the way.

Thanks Juan. Keep your eye on package deals for HI and you can make the trip a reality someday.

Rick, please, there are no dumb questions and I'd hardly call my hobby pursuits as seasoned. I'm always happy to help if I can though.

I'm typically shooting in full auto exposure mode too, only I will override the settings with the command **** to get the aperture/shutter speed combo I'm looking for. I'll review the histogram and image to ensure I captured the photo I was looking for, otherwise I'll adjust the exposure compensation some if needed. If I attempt to take a photo that includes the ocean, I shoot no slower than 1/125 second to avoid blur in the waves. On the tidal pools however, I wanted very blurry waves and found anything over a second in exposure length gave me the look I wanted. I'm using a 28-70mm lens on a camera that has a full frame sensor (no image crop / magnification). For most of these photos, a circular polarizer was used, but since I was shooting almost into the sun, it just made my shutter speed slower which I wanted. I like landscape photography, so I always carry this filter with me. I cheated and applied an equivalent of a graduated neutral density filter on most of the photos. I typically can not find a smooth straight line in nature and have been finding this is easy to apply in photochomp later which also allows for non linear application. Also a few less things to carry in the already heavy camera bag.

Other tip for your road trip, play in the magic hour or glorious light
Spend some time scouting a photo location for later when the light is better.

Your camera (and lens) don't matter, so don't worry about the cost and instead learn what amazing things you can do with it.

A good quality tripod is oftentimes what separates the men from the boys. All photos except the last were taken with a tripod. Both tidal pools photos were printed at the Maui Costco at 12" x 18" and were super sharp only because I used a tripod. Best article I've ever read about tripods was from Thom. I'm using one of his cheaper alternatives, but I wished I read it earlier because it would have saved me more money.

I hope this brain dump helps; let me know if you want more specific info.

Brain dump is a great start.

I just checked out some of the links; I'm good for following your lead. Fatali's work is incredible. Patience is a requirement in taking wonderful photos; I'm usually spazing between work, dinner, or whatever.

Thanks for the super contribution Dave. See? Photostomp isn't the make-any-snapshot-into-a-masterpiece program.

I searched for glory light...

...and all I got was this:

This was a bit earlier, you can see the small amount of sky that the sun peeked through.

This is the old road from (not to) Prescott. It started raining a bit later, and this is NOT a road to be on when muddy!

Okay, time to start including Minis again into my sunset photos.
We actually had clouds in the evening sky here for a change. I took a few quick shots while commuting home using my point & shoot kept in my laptop bag. "Twiggy" is intentionally dark; Konky would be revolted by the filth of my wheels and OctaneGuy would kick me out of here if he saw the layers of dirt covering the paint. I'm still stumped how "Swifty" can always appear so clean while driving on beautiful dirt back roads? Kurt, please explain the cleaning voodoo that you do do so very well.

About time!

The trick is having Chili Red! Also I did wax it last week, it was the cleanest it's been for awhile. Dark colors reflect light more, and grime would interfere thusly. White really shows just because. Most of my shots catch Swifty dirty, ever notice I avoid the back end? The real reason is the flash blows out the license plate. I heard on the radio: Don't worry what other people think of you (and your dirty car), they don't do it very often.

BTW: nice photos, but the car is a little dark.

Both ends today!

I motored to the ridge above ChinaMart. Had action to the north too.:impatient

The speed of the sun dropping was exagerated by the slot of open sky.

I hoped more color would happen... but:

This storm cell was too interesting to ignore because...

Some lightning action, which I hoped would get included with this:

Back to the sunset:

Don't look closely, Swifty is filthy!

Our monsoon is officially over, but we had some clouds this morning. Also note how clean Swifty is.
