Do Mini people still wave at each other??
To some people a MINI is just another vehicle in their driveway. So someone waving at them in another MINI doesn't register. lol
Drive through Monmouth County - I wave at everyone whether I get one back or not! I have to admit that when we picked up our MINI in November I received more waves. I'm wondering if it has slacked off due to rolled up windows, nasty weather, etc., etc., etc. Oh well, I'll keep waving.
As I've said before....if you buy it used you don't the dealers tutorial about waving and the Mini culture that you have to embrace if you buy a Mini. Sad for the corner lot guys. I especially like waving when my windows are open. I extend the whole arm out the window and its hard to ignore even by the " it's cute and gets good gas mileage" buyer.
The more rare your car the more inclined people are to wave at each other. I remember back in the '50s when owning a Renault Dauphine and then a VW bug we always waved at each other because of 'how unique we were'. As traffic volume increases and more and more unusual cars are becoming rare the value of the wave has diminished. The most unusual wave I ever received was about a year ago. I was driving a Scion FR-S and an on coming Ferrari gave me the wave. I waved back.
That's the problem.....too many Mini's. Some people feel it to be excessive to wave at all of them. They'd rather try to ignore you. You know they see you though! Hahaha..... I think culture is driven or defined by exclusivity not commonality. That's why Toyota drivers don't wave at eachother. They'd rather be part of the crowd.
I try to wave at all Minis that I see. Passed a BRG w/ black roof on off ramp of I-180, I threw up a late wave, the other driver was looking back surprised to see another Mini. Not a lot Minis in area, but getting to be more.
Waving to each other
Forgive my seemingly naïve response, but Im only a MINI owner by accident and for the last 6 months or so.
When I bought my MINI, although I had planned to simply fix it and sell it, I did not tell the previous owner I had planned to flip the car.
It was only after fixing it and driving it around for a week to shake it down and make sure the head gasket repair was right that I discovered what an incredible car this thing is.
After I decided to keep her, I started asking the former owner (who was a co-worker and terribly fond of her old MINI as well as a real **** as it applies to keeping service records) about the vehicles history.
It was here that I learned the following items:
Its a bonnet, not a hood
Its a boot, not a trunk
My car is a MINI, not a Mini
With ownership, I am required to wave to other MINI owners
We don't go drive our MINI's we go MOTORING
I learned these things, along with a few others.
What I learned as I developed my own subtle wave to other MINI owners was that it is far more likely that middle aged women will wave back than young girls and other men.
In summation, I wave to everyone, and at least 50% of the time, people wave back. At least one person in the MINI in front of me at a Tim Horton's, bought me a cup of coffee. Its a good tradition and wave back or not, I personally love the idea and will do it. If nothing else, its a great way to meet women!

I got the two today! Both on 517 in Oldwick NJ. An Orange Convertible and a very nice R53 in blue with a solid single white stripe down the middle. Both returned enthusiastic waves. I feel very lucky, because the dry spell went way too long.
Not a whole lotta waving going on in Middle Georgia and not that many Mini's here. Now when i had a Jeep Wrangler - those guys all waved or at least gave you a steering wheel finger salutes. Not so much with Minis. I'm doing my part...we'll see.

Only here in Treasure Valley.
Gotta say, it does make ya feel so good when they do wave back, its well worth throwing the effort out there. I live in the Detroit area and I figured that no one in that crap hole would wave back. Surprisingly, lots do!
In addition to the coolness and MINI loyalty shown by those who fire back, it really shows my kids that there are still nice people out there, and that a few people do pay attention to others on the road! LOL!!!

One time, I was driving with the wife in our old MCS and was focused on the road when a non-MINI vehicle was waving at me, and I noticed the wife's gaze follows them as they pass by.
Wife: Those two young blondes were were waving at you.
Me: Huh? What two young blondes?
Wife: (Smiling) Good answer.
So remember when you don't get a wave back that there might be a good reason behind it. lol

It's a sad day. It's in the 40's for the first time in weeks in NE. I went for a cruise and saw not ONE MINI! I'm truely depressed. Must say she is so much nicer to drive above 37 degrees. -10 sucks. Weve now had I don't know how many mornings under zero this winter. A bit odd, even for NE. I get worse gas mileage when this cold.
'05 MCS kite blue and two black stripes. All stock. 2 moon roofs, alloy wheels and still can't find a blue meanie window decal.
