We saw an oncoming MINI on the highway this afternoon, in Central Arkansas. Waved through our sunroof, and got a quick wave in reply. We were in our '64 Porsche 356 at the time--wonder if the guy had any idea he was waving to a MINI owner...or maybe he was just polite.

Didn't get a wave, but when I came out of the store today, a Hot Chocolate parked next to me. I sort of startled the woman who had just gotten out. She was leaving me a note. "Nice car "

So far in 2014 I've waved at (yes i've counted) 74 MINIs and 12 minis (yes there's a difference) and only gotten 2 waves back. Disappointing to say the least, i did get a thumbs up from a crown victoria a couple of days ago though

Here you go...About waves...
Is there a difference between men and women?
The color of the MINIs?
Whether yours or theirs is a base MINI, an S or a JCW?

The reason I ask is my Wife and her MINI get a lot of attention. Myself and my MINI get none at all. Her's is a base MINI, mine is an S. Her's is Indi Blue; mine is High Class Gray. Just today she was asked about hers, how she liked it and if it would fit a tall person. At the end of her discussion with this person, she figured she had sold them on a MINI...

And, yes, when driving her car I get some waves (not all of the time) and get almost none in my S.

Just curious.

The only correlation I have been able to make, from my personal experience, is that modded MINIs are more likely to contain drivers who wave. Bonnet stripes are not a reliable indicator, as some come from the dealer with them.

The theory I derive from that is that the people who put more into their MINIs are more enthusiastic about them, while the stock ones are split between enthusiasts who have not yet begun to mod and the "I wanted a small commuter car" set, to whom the car is "just a car".

C ya,
Dutch

Was the Crown Vic a police car?

Those are pretty disappointing statistics--I haven't kept careful tabs, but I'd guess I've gotten waves from all but about 1/2 dozen. Probably waved at about 40 or so in that time. Arkansas's a smaller state, but we make up for it with enthusiasm. Just wait 'til the first MINI dealer opens in another month or so.

I think you've pegged it, Joe--the only thing I'd add is that you're much more likely to get a wave from an S than a Justa. And while bonnet stripes aren't a reliable indicator, ANY other non-factory stripes or graphics are.

Mines an S limited edition, Hampton Edition, MINI and I wave no matter what the weather is like. Although, the weather in SoCal doesn't really change dramatically haha. I feel like most MINIs i see are just people who buy it due to marketing or just buy it because it's a cute car and they are not enthusiastic nor happy enough to wave at another MINI. Heck, a month ago a police officer (on duty) followed me for 9 miles (made me f***ing nervous) then pulls me over, walks up, and says, "Nice MINI ya got! I'm looking to get one for my daughter, how do you like yours?". Haha but yeah I get more waves and/or attention from non-MINIs than i do from MINIs

Yeah, you're right. The non-stock aspect was where I was digging. Some bonnet stripes come with the car, some are added later. Non-stock styled striping is a good indicator of enthusiasm. To give you an idea of where I'm at, I have an R53 with custom rally striping and have actually cut factory sheetmetal to put in vents in the bonnet (it gets a bit warm here in the land of sunshine and bromides) to let out heat.

I'd say the "justa" phenomenon you mention is due to the people wanting a commuter car deciding they don't want/need the extra power (and maintenance) that comes with a boosted engine.

That's almost better than a wave, SkyRideTravis.

You know what's worst? A woman driving a Justa with factory stripes! Even in traffic, side by side, you can't get a wave...from another woman. Guess Mama's childhood lectures about not talking to strangers applies to other MINI drivers, too! They always seem to be locked into looking straight ahead, not all over, including the sides.

I have owned my MCS for about six months and not a single glance from any other MINI owners. I don't even try to wave or glance back anymore. I'm not very social anyway...lol.

I had a mini driver walk up to my window as I was getting out in the car wash, freaked me out a bit actually. He wanted to talk about my car, unfortunately I was in a bit of hurry and didn't stick around for a chat. Plus him and his wife kinda weirded me out, sorry if your on here!

Today marked my one week anniversary of owning a MINI. So far I am batting a thousand as I have encountered one other MINI on the road, and they did wave back. It was suspiciously exciting to get the wave back!

Damn it "T", I've been hanging out over there.......( Stalking U ), and haven't seen any MINI's yet.
I'll keep trying, but be assured, the fat guy in the BRG II Clubman being overly enthusiastic towards you doesn't want a date........just a wave!

You're not a very good stalker, BubbaJCW. Hope to see you soon so we can share a wave.
