I've done that a few times now out of habit (had a loaner BMW when Brisby was in the shop). I just figure the MINI drivers knew what was up, when I was waving with a big stupid grin.

It gets really awkward when you wave and the other driver blatantly ignores you, but usually people I see are really nice about it. :D

Was leader of a 5 MINI pack today and flashed and waved fanatically at another MINI and got a great response. Wonder if she realized there were 4 more waves coming!

I've had my MCS for about 3 months now, so here is my waving report card:

I'm kind of disappointed in the ratio of waves to be honest. I've only gotten 4 total waves, and all of those were return waves, none initiated by the other driver. Granted, most people are busy driving and are probably better off NOT waving to me, but it seems like most of the ones I encounter are the "cute with good mileage" type of owners and not the "I'm in love with this car" variety that you find here on the boards.

Come on folks, wave, it's so lonely out here!!

Jon

Am getting about a half return rate. Recently been passing a different Mini now on a consistent basis. Young woman around 30 and she NEVER waves. I will continue to wave at her till my hand falls off....dammit...I WILL CONVERT HER!!!!

Maybe she doesn't know she's supposed to wave and thinks you're a stalker.

I've been thinking (probably too much) about this waving thing.

Here in Minneapolis, MINIs are about as common on the road as Mazdas. I see at least 5 on my commute in each direction every day, and even just walking somewhere downtown 2-3 will drive past and I'll see another 4-5 parked.

If I start waving at all of these people, my arms are going to fall off. And I have a high assumption that these people aren't wavers at all -- this is Nordic country after all, the natives keep to themselves. "Minnesota Nice" is code for "when encountering strangers, employ the plastic smile."

Thoughts on this? I don't know if there are other metro areas that have a ton of MINIs on the road, but do you think the idea of waving dies completely once the uniqueness is taken out of the equation?

I live in Southern CA and there are nine MINI dealers within 70 miles of my house (about 10% of the total number of MINI dealers in the country). My commute is about 25 miles each way and even at that, I MAY see one each way. You don't see a lot of them here for some reason.

That is a distinct possibility. Very few Minis in my area, so when we see another we get all giddy and wave and smile....usually...but not always..I certainly do, being the Miniac that I am...

Was in NYC last night with the Mr Beanmobile and had another Mini owner honk, give the thumbs up (I hope it was her thumb?) and take a pic all while she had a big smile. Also when I picked up the car from the parking garage where it was parked in front, the owner told me there were a few people taking pics by it who says New Yorkers aren't nice.

So happy to hear your Mr. Bean mobile is bringing you and others so much joy! I know my Mini gets a bit of attention and smiles, with her checkered mirror caps and diagonal MINI side stripes and various cute decals (bend the rules, rule the bends, and Actual Size, I (heart) my Mini and my mini club decal). They are so much more than just cars!

Sure wish you'd motor down to Maryland so Giggles could meet the Mr. beanmobile!! I think they'd get along just swell...

@Singer05 - Hopefully you're prepared for these reactions for ages to come. You've got something ridiculously unique, hilariously fun, eye-catching, and chock full of nostalgia value. You may as well be driving the Weinermobile

@GigglesMcMini - tentatively taking delivery of the Coupe on 11/26, barring my boat going under or a snowstorm of doom. There will be eleventy billion pics, hopefully the love will continue in RL!

Haha love that "bend the rules, rule the bends" and yes they are so much more than cars, when I sold my radically customized 69 GTO clone beast to build this for my son who is the biggest Mr Bean fan ever I had no idea what a blast it would be to drive. Don't think I can make it to Maryland but someday hopefully there will be a Mini event maybe halfway Giggles and the Mr Beanmobile will meet up at. The cars are great and I'm finding out the owners are pretty cool too! Enjoy

Thank you very much I've been through a lot in life and truly realize the power of laughter and smiles and if I can add a few more on the road then so be it and Mr Bean is really the best!!

Last Sunday, we met up in Lancaster, Pa. With some new Mini owners from Philly. Had met them on NAM. they are great folks. We met halfway, and, yes, Mini owners are terrific. Would love to do a run with Philly Mini! Funny, we used to live in Flemington....loved the area, but returned to our birth state due to work....have fun!

This past weekend I saw two MINI's and I got to a point of honking and/or flashing my lights prior to waving and neither waved back! I was saddened. However, I gave them a break since it was dark out (silly time changes...should just stick with DST year round!).

This morning on my way to work, I saw a MINI as I was about to turn off so I slowed down, flashed my lights and waved to a wave back! Made my morning!

So, this begs me to ask what others do...either at night or not what do you do on the highway when you see other MINI's traveling the same direction? Seems like most people (and myself probably included) don't really pay attention to those who are passing until its too late! What do you do? Granted I'm usually the one doing the passing so this usually means I'm the one wondering how to get their attention!

I have found that it is really quite random who waves back and who doesn't. I almost ALWAYS wave. I get a wave back very few times. Many times, I'll be behind a MINI and I'll speed up just to wave at them, but then they either:
a) ignore me
b) look at me like I'm crazy
c) wave back just to get rid of me
d) wave because they love their cars!

I usually honk (friendly honk), because then, if they don't acknowledge it, I don't feel like such an idiot.

There is a MINI dealership literally 5 minutes from my house, so there are a ton of MINIs around here. It sucks, because people just buy the cars because they get good MPG. I feel very few people are buying them these days because of what they are... Which results in less people feeling passionate about their cars, and less people waving.

But to me, it's worth it for just that ONE person to whom you wave, and they jump up in their seat, smile like crazy, and wave back. I had that happen one time... made my week.

/semi-rant.

I've found that flashing the lights works very well, esp with rally lights. I almost always get a wave, unless they are not at all paying attention, which is just dangerous, heh.

This is definitely encouraging me to get some rally lights! Time to ignore work and peruse!
