F55/F56 Shift boot and knob came off

Shift boot and **** came off

I finally got enough miles on my car to start some very spirited driving. I was giving a friend a ride when I wound it up in first and slammed second gear. Mind you, I am a very small person 125lb soaking wet and I didn't even slam it that hard. Upon slamming the gear, off comes the **** and boot exactly like indicated in consumer reports article. I was shocked when it happened and needless to say, very embarrassed.

Has anybody else experienced this yet?
I am thinking of going with a Whalen because it actually gets mounted instead of a ball basically just sitting on the end of the shaft.

There is a service bulletin for that. Please see your dealer.

Pulled mine off on purpose while sitting in my driveway. Not really as hard as I would have expected. Would be interested in what the service bulletin does to stop it. Personally as I'm updating to a Whalen **** soon, the relatively easy removal is appreciated. Maybe it is my shifting pattern, but I can't really see it happening to me while shifting. I have tried by the way, 300lb dry

I guess I am a hard shifter. My old 89 mustang that I built from scratch ended up having a bent shift fork from going into third way to hard. Some short throw kit solved that problem (and a new transmission.)

Always threat a car gently like a lovely wife. I had never such a problem with dozens of cars and my weight is "dry" 240 lb with a BMI of 24.
Just glue it back with epoxy.

I agree "slamming" gears is definitely going to cause issues long term, but I have done it once since I got the car... The time the boot flew off. And I use the term "slamming" very loosely.

However... A shift **** that simply slides off with very little force is definitely a problem.

Agreed, when I pulled mine off it really wasn't hard. It is all a leverage thing with it coming off easily, the pressure I applied is different than my shifting pattern, but I can see where a different shifting pressure could very easily cause the thing to come off.
