EIM Wintertime Chat Room
Convertible
Those of you who subscribe to MotoringFile Daily know that Bill Jacobs MINI in Chicago is having an exclusive sneak preview of the new 2009 R57 MINI Convertible for all customers and MotoringFile readers in the area next weekend. I sure would like to go and take pictures. Is anybody from EIM planning to go????????????
Hey Daryl, can you email me any info about this? My son's band is playing that night (Saturday) in Aurora and Jan and I were planning to drive over and see the show. Naperville is practically right next door. I'm thinking we might go early and check things out!
In addition, anything you've ever wanted to know about MOTD is available in multiple threads in the MOTD forum at this link:

I hope we do indeed manage to stir up some participation!
Jan and I happened to be in the neighborhood (my son's band was playing in Aurora last night), so we stopped at Bill Jacobs MINI in Naperville yesterday and checked out the new R57 S they had on display.
Here she is:

Jan and Jon the MA checking it out:

Ya know, this thing fits pretty darn good! -

This one had the Cold Wx, Sport, and Convenience packages and listed out right around $32K. We were able to open and close the top in the showroom - it works very slick and smooth and I really like the partial open "sunroof" feature and the extra single window toggle for controlling all four window motors at once. The Openometer was far less intrusive than I had anticipated, so I figured I'd be able to live with it okay. Everything else on the control panel was fairly standard R56 fare. The seats were more comfortable and supportive than the non-sport seats in my '05, and the fore-aft adjuster is much more intuitive.
Of course, when I brought up the propensity for melting hood scoops and the cold start death rattle, the MA acted like he didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I found that a little disappointing.
OBTW, they had several dozen new R56 and Clubbies on their lot. Plenty of choices for buyers who'd rather drive one away than order and wait.

I must admit there was real temptation, but I still have too much of a love affair with my R50. Plus, since these are the first models to come off the assembly line I'm happy to let other guinea pigs wring out the bugs before I'd consider plunking down $30K+...
Though, the R57 is super sweet (still being tempted, I guess

Workers Throw Fruit
In addition to the Bulldog news that Linda shared, the BBC has reported that MINI workers in Oxford (where our MINIs were built) threw fruit at their union leaders because of layoffs. Thing are bad all over
BUT we have lots of very fun MINI motoring adventures to look forward to!!

A June Lodging Idea
Linda and I are planning an abbreviated EIM East Meets West trip to Winona in June. We hope to get details posted by the end of March. I just came across a "rustic" little resort in Wisconsin, 23 miles from Winona that has 6 cabins. Wouldn't it be super cool to have the EIM folks take over the whole resort? The rates are $49 for the regular cabin, and $59 for the "executive." I'm not sure we can get all 6, but is there interest in this????? We're just planning overnight on June 29.

Oldsbear got himself a Clubman!!

How do I know? Check out the change to his signature!
(He's probably reluctant to post -- doesn't want to appear to be bragging about his new MINI -- but the cat's out of the bag now!)
Congrats!!

Okay, okay, if you insist
Molly-II-Bee is scheduled to be born Wednesday, March 11. Her length and weight can be found online (Miracles of ultrasound.).
Molly I is returning to Schaumburg, so she probably will not be seeing EIM after April. That's where I will be picking up her sister, too
