Alta Twurbo/Turbo questions here.....

Received my Twurbo/Turbo kit today. Im gonna use this thread for all my questions during and after install of the kit. I hope all of you that own the kit will chime in so you will get a notice when I need some of your assistance First impressions of the kit was that its very well made. Not as many parts as I thought there would be, but I guess thats good. Noticed that the turbo was ALOT bigger then I expected. The one on my 1.8 Turbo Cordia is tiny compared to this one. Anyway, here is the FIRST of MANY questions Im sure I'll have during the install. Im gonna take a ride to the MINI dealership to get some supplies. Other then what I have listed, is there anything else I should pick up while Im down there? Its about a 80-90 mile round trip to the dealer. I want to Try and just make just one trip.....

1)Power Steering Fluid
2)Antifreeze
3)Exhaust Manifold Gasket

On the power steering fluid and Antifreeze, how much of each should I pick up?
Thanks.....

The wife and I went through the kit tonight to check for all the parts. I know one thing that would help out alot is a checklist with pictures. A Greddy Twin Turbo kit I installed with my Dad had a picture check list and it made checking alot easier.

Please take pictures and notes while doing your install. There are many of us out here in cyberspace that would like to "follow along" so to speak. I personally would love to see just how difficult this install is to do in the driveway or garage.

Thanks!

It would be awesome if you would follow the install process with pictures and notes... It would be like a reality show

Seriously, it would be great to have a bunch of pics of the install and videos of the final products!

The fluids bought from the dealer are euro so you will be getting a liter of powersteering fluid. Not on your list and probably not going to find at the dealer is some high temp RTV sealant.

During our install we took many pictures. I am halfway through a complete writeup using our pictures as references. There are alot of times during the install where a picture would really help to clarify things.

Your best bet is to take your time during the install and not to rush into things without reading ahead.

If you ever have any questions during the install feel free to drop me a line either by pm, email, or phone and I'd be happy to help.

-Cliff

The best of luck to you on your install! Should be great fun, and a blast once your done!

If you would ever consider it, if your located if Dover, could you please swing by the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area with it once your done It would be quite amazing to see a twincharged MINI in person.

BTW, are you on www.sunshineminis.org if you are located in Florida? It would be an amazing addition to have a twincharged MINI to add to the ranks.

thespider530, I do hang out in Sunshine Minis once in awhile. (I go by the same user name there.) I went to the very first meeting they had a LONG time ago, but never went to another meeting. I live about 20min from Tampa. Maybe I'll look you up in Dec. Im planning on going down to Miami for the HIN show. Are you going to the show?

Oh you know it. I've only been to one HIN, last years. Loved it. It was great to see some Minis there, but the green classic stole my heart. We're you there last year? Of course the girls make it even better

It's an owners show right? Think you can enter your twincharged beast?!

supplies

Blue threadlock, teflon tape, SC puller and tensioner tool, zip tie and motor oil and filter. Be prepare to drill/tap into the intercooler for boost hook up unless you're using the DFIC that already pre-drilled

Like Cliff said, read the whole instruction first a few times.

So true...so true...Make sure you teflon every fluid connector thread & use lock washers on your turbo studs or the nuts will rattle off & the studs may backout.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys, keep them coming. Im taking notes As for the cat. If I hook the down pipe the way it is (No cat), would I throw a code? I think I was told that it will and would need to get a o2 sim. Is there something else that can be done to avoid this? Since the my MINI is not my daily driver, Im not in no rush to complete it. Dont get me wrong, I want to get it done, but gonna take my time..... *SMILE* Oh yea, by the way, how do you guys like the BOV that comes with the kit? Does it seem to be a quality unit? Ive always used Blitz or Greddy in the past. This one felt extremely light, not heavy like the others. Can you guys post a pic of where you installed your TT, Boost Controller and AFC? I have the TT coming, but would like to get an idea on were to install the rest. I will eventually get the others. The MINIs dash set up is very hard to install/mount all these electronic items. Its tooo rounded*SMILE*

I see you won the one off of Ebay. I was looking at it. I wish I would have seen it before I bought the new kit. I did notice in the picture that the metal airbox part is not there. Also I do not see the pulley. There should be a larger pulley than stock to reduce boost from the Supercharger. Be sure to ask the seller if it is included. I will wait for you to do the write up on the install. You got a great deal on the kit. We will help each other out on the install.

Have any of you done a write up on how to wire up a Turbo Timer in the MINI? As the Turbo kit gains in popularity, maybe we should get a sticky going on certain items that people will do with a turbo kit, such as:
*How to wire up a Turbo Timer
*How to wire up the Apexi Select Air Flow Controller
*General install of a Boost Controller Manual or Electronic

Hats off to the guys that do picture write ups. I tried it one time and there is ALOT of work that goes into doing something like this. Its very hard to stop what your doing, take a picture then start back up then when your all done, do a write up. Again, My hats off to the guys that do write ups. Maybe I'll do the turbo timer write up, "IF" I can get a wire diagram for the ingnition system....

turbo aswell ...........

Hi all !! im new to here and from australia , im also going to twincharge my mini . i have priced up an alta kit and to me it is $6000.00 australian dollars , so i then went out to various performance workshops that i am close friends with and showed them all the photos and information that i had and i asked these guys to try and half copy half construct a new kit for me and they did with instructions from me that it all has to look awesome and the turbo be high mounted and i would like a front mount intercooler and oil cooler because the car is a show car i want it to look pretty insane and also a msd ignition set up was put into it . They then came back to me with prices nearly $2000.00 cheaper so i decided to go with this option i have also emailed alta and told them the same thing ! those guys are great !! they still offered to help me out there are a couple of questions i would like to ask : how is it , that all you need to tune the turbo kit is the apexi afc ??? seems to simple to me and not safe for the motor ??? also why do some companys use the gt3071r and others gt28rs ??? how much can the motor handle ???? is it possible to run a nitrous shot with the turbo kit ???

anything else i could find helpfull would be very very greatly appreciated

thank you all very much .......... hope to speak to you soon

TwinC

I believed a lot of R&D for Alta to come up with the Twurbo kit and that to explained the cost It's not like you can just make a manifold, throw a turbo charger and some piping and wish it could all work. Testing and research to established a safe (KIT) for DIY is more than just that. Also other kits required specified installer which limited to a lot of tuner out there.

Plus they also provide unlimited support

That's a nice ridedefinitely a show car You would be so happy if running the new M7 DFIC polished intercooler with the TC. That's also a show piece plus great performance too. Contact me if you're interested.

To tune any kit safely you will also need to monitor your air/fuel. Installing a wideband o2 sensor is almost necessary. They allow you to view your air/fuel in real time to allow you do adjust your fuel curve w/ the apexi for optimal performance.
