Sorry, I cannot read through 19 pages right now...is there any video's or sound clips of the HAI installed? I'm thinking this will be a nice cheap mod I can do!

Thanks Thameth!

I read through all 19...

and I don't remember seeing any vids or audio of the HAI in action. Mine seems only slightly louder than stock. I can hear a little growl every now and then if I get on it quickly from a stop and a slight whine of the SC...

Its really a difficult one to get. Its so inexpernsive that most people just try it, if they don't like it then you just put it back to stock....

HAI Whistle?

Does anyone know if the HAI will exhibit the same "whistle" as the CAI?

You bet!

All the CAIs are a bit different, but they all remove those funky dead-end passages on the original intake tracts before the air-box. Those are to cancle sounds at specific frequencies, but also screw with the airflow.

The whistle is from air in a part-open TB.

Wow...an error....I'm stunned

Most of the intake kits leave the original ducting from the front to the lower half of the air box.

The exceptions I can think of are the Typhoon and the AGS.

Ha!

the dead end passages are on the ducting from the box to the front of the car. It's removed by all the kits.... At least I thought it was. It sure should be! But I'm running the HAI, so what do I know......

Mine whistles a little...

I just noticed that mine seems to whistle slightly, but it's not obnoxious... It's mostly the supercharger letting me know it's working!

I've had/have in order:
BMP/ProMINI
Alta
HDI

That duct is still there.

I don't think it should be removed but replaced with something more efficient. It does a decent job of ducting air and I did some measurements years ago that showed it had a mild ram air effect.
It's one saving grace may have been to save you from water induction with the stock kit as well as some noise reduction.

I've tried to source some large diameter tubing to replace it with. Preferably something flexible like silicone. Don't want to use brake or dryer ducting since it looks cheesy.
Any ideas or sources would be appreciated.

I thought about this some more...

and you're right, it is still on many of the intakes. I guess that the whistle shows up because more of the air is coming from the cowl, not through this duct. The piece on my MDX has even more sever whatevers..... I was thinking of just cutting them off, putting something stiff over it to make a wall, and using that aluminum tape to hold the stuff in place.... Should smooth air-flow....

Great idea. Why didn't I think of that

Even easier, as an experiment I'm going to put the aluminum tape inside the tube since it's rigid enough to bridge those gaps. That'll be a good first step anyway. If I like it I'll move forward with something.
Thanks

the whistle or Buzz?

I've mentioned this before but haven't done anything about it since it doesn't bother me that bad

but I have more of a "buzz" than a whistle just as the engine goes to 3k rpm. I spoke with several people and the conclusion is that it may be the throttle body vibrating with all that air coming through.

I've had it for 20K miles and have no complaints. You have to clean it often since it is directly exposed and can't be rotated to a clean side with the angled boot.

I've heard that big closed off pipe at the bottom of the "ram" air pipe from the grill to the intake is there to get rid of a certain resonation. I don't mind resonation. How about sealing it off with some duct tape? Possible?

The problem isn't the ressonance.

It's the disturbance to air flow by having the holes in the tubes. So when Obehave is done mucking about, uh testing, we should know something....

The hole is in the tube to drain the water right?

But i'm not saying the problem is resonance, i'm saying that BMW put the little pipe there to stop it, didn't they?

It's some kind of acoustic horn but there is also a small drain hole in the bottom of the long vertical horn. It sure wouldn't drain any quantity of water in a hurry so can't see it being much help in a potential hydro lock situation.
Since I run an intake with the rear wall removed I think I'll be safe. If I end up with any water lying in the bottom of the old intake half I'll make decision from that point.
Tomorrow is a gym night so unless my old knees are giving me fits I won't be home until almost dark. Even then I'll probably be too beat to do much.

yeh i run an intake as well, and my rear wall is gone too. The acoustic horn looks like it would disrupt the ram air effect, the only problem is, how would i go about getting my hand inside the pipe? looks too small

:D much better

lemme know how it fares. BTW, what are you gonna seal it with? aluminium tape?

Maybe it'd be better to get someone to custom make a bigger bore, straighter pipe for me
