Well my RU-1550 has arrived. FYI, Partsource got it for me in about 3 days (I'm in Canada). Before I install the HAI, I have a few questions:

1. Andy/andyone: Probably a stupid question, but...Would the greater efficiency of the HAI depend at all on having a 15% pulley? That is, will it also be a worthwhile mod for an MCS with stock pulley?

2. Andy: Got any more numbers or results...? Then again my intake is stock, and the HAI seems to have bettered the Alta in terms of air flow, so the HAI seems like a no-brainer for me. Which leads to my next question...

3. Andy/anyone: Does anyone have a graph/chart showing Alta intake vs. stock intake? Or, HAI vs. stock?

4. Bisch: Should I hold off on installing the HAI until we hear about your idea?
Thanks all!

Nope. Do it. What I am working on has only a little to do with the HAI, but it could not be done without it. I hope to have it working by tonight...I'm taking it to the dragstrip Wednesday night for "testing".

they have a airflow and temp chart on the first few pages of the thread. check it out.

pretty impressive for a $35 mod.

Stock is stock, K&N is the filter discussed earlier, and foam is foam filter similar to the alta but MUCH smaller mounted directly to the TB. This was the biggest foam filter I could fit on the TB because the foam guys dont make oval filters like the K&N.

Design..

Does fabricating your own pipe to the TB and using a smaller filter yield any results? Has anyone constructed any ram air type of system using the cowling and inline filter? Just curious, because it seems that the stock piping is producing bottlenecks with the wind flow.

Thanks Bisch. Good to hear we will have comprehensive pics and data by Wednesday night. Just jivin' ya.

Thanks Macncheese, exactly what I was asking about. HAI with RU-1550 it is then. Apologies if your chart was already in the thread...I have read it and couldn't recall seeing such a chart.

wow. i'm surprised at how well that dinky little foam filter did.

i went to the uni filter site, and they had a couple filters that may work pretty well.

But really, if the foam filter was bigger, i wonder how much better it would do... hmmmm....

I have two boxes of unifilters from when i was developing the intake. and the problem is that thats the biggest filter that will fit there! They do have slanted foam ones that may be bigger and work better but the K&N is cheap and readily available. I waited weeks for the filters from Australia. I'll dig them out and see what I have available.

My HAI is now Emissions-Legal

Yesterday, I installed an elbow on my K&N filter and plumbed a section of 1/2" ID heater hose from the driver's side valve cover into the elbow. Here's a quick pic:

This does away with the breather filter that I had and allows the crankcase vapors to enter the intake system, as they do stock. The elbow and the hose were about $3 each at the local Pep Boys.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, but am wondering if it could be done from the under side? I think there might be enough room. has anyone tried this?

Andy: looks like you cut that tube by chewing it off

By the way, I cleaned up my wiring...added the oil temp gauge and did a proper sensor mount for that and the oil pressure. Of course access was easier since I also had the subframe off to replace the steering rack. Even cleaned and re-olied my air filter. Went hog wild and built a new 4 gauge bracket and discretely mounted my intercooler temp gauge. Found the exhaust rattle was a loose exterior sheild on the cat.

Andy, for people with oil catch cans installed, would you use that tube to provide suction for the catch can?

jlm, got a photo of the 4 gauge bracket to share??? Would love to see! Oh, where did you eventually decide to tap from to get oil temp? The top of the oil filter and drain plug seem to be most popular, but each have their draw backs...

Say something about the HAI, besides the hose mauling, so Andy doesn't get angry .

removed the entire filter housing; tapped into the boss on the D side for the oil temp sensor; Tee-d into the existing oil pressure outlet, ran an -4 Aeroquip line to the new sensor, mounted on the firewall. this leaves the oil filter can stock.

the gages are close to the levers, but don't interfere. the steering wheel is still, barely, fully adjustable, I can just barely see all the gages from the sitting positon. oil press/temp on the left; boost, water temp on the right.

just noticed the gage layout is almost exactly the same as my Dodge truck!

First, Very nice job, I like the idea of all the guages in a place easy to read. My only question is does it feel crowded now?

I seem to recall you saying that you were going to try the boss side, and you did! Sounds like an ideal place. Does your boost gauge always rest at 0 when the engine is off? I'm always well into vacuum...

I have the electronic boost gauge, which rests at zero with the key on or off and engine off. at initial key on, before the engine starts, it re-calibrates itself to ambient=zero.

I don't recommend fiddling with the oil filter housing unless you have access due to header removal or dropped subframe. it is very hard to get at. I'd be happy to mod one for you, anticpating access at some later date.
