I guess this HAI is heavier than I thought.

Whoa, that new intake is pulling so much hot air from inside the engine compartment that it's sucking that side of the car donw onto the pavement!

Good work, Andy!

BTW, the fastest MINI was also using a HAI. I placed 16th out of 32 entries in class E, so I met my goal for the event.

umm.... soooo....

did we get any switched filters number yet?

anyone do anything regarding the HAI in terms of whether that gains are due to strictly the filter or something else, gas mileage, bleh bleh?

anyone else actually try it out? i'm waiting for mine in the mail, i wonder if it comes with clamps...

oh, is there a specific model number for the fram oil breather?

any other details we might be interested in?

thanks!

I've been reading this board for a few weeks and I'm really impressed by the courteousness and knowledge of the people here; I'm glad to finally be registered. I've been wondering about this mod; I'm no expert on engines, but if you increase air intake, wouldn't that just make the mixture lean? Does the ECU automagically increase fuel flow to richen the mixture? If so, I would think that's where the extra HP comes from. And if that's the case, do you have to worry about pistons/rods going bad sooner because of the excess energy from combustion? I'm familiar with (much) older (and simpler) cars, and am trying to get up to speed so I can properly modify my '04 MCS. Would someone please enlighten me?

Welcome to NAM LilOleCar!

The MINI uses a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) system that almost instantly compensates the fuel delivered to the amount of air being injested, resulting in the desired air/fuel ratio. Feedback from the O2 sensors confirms or gives info to adjust the ratio accordingly. This is all done automatically and quickly.

--->Andy: I'm impressed thus far. Sorry if this is redundant, but have you tried identical filters on the ALTA box and direct-mounted to the TB? This would allow direct apples-to-apples correlation of collected data. Motor-On!

Cheers,
Ryan

The additional gains come from deleting the ductwork associated with the stock intake... Gas milage should be up but was down because it was hard to keep my foot up

You cant direct mount an alta style filter without it be significantly smaller than the one alta actually uses becuse of space constraints. I found the smaller one offers slightly less performance.

I've tried both the alta filter and the K&N filter on a "stock hose" intake and so little if any difference in performance/boost/intake temp. I dont think this was ever claimed to be a better filter, its just a better (and cheaper) solution.

Andy, Any performance "Show me the numbers" stuff yet? If it even comes close to the Alta, I don't see how somone could justify the paying what? 5 times more for the Alta?

I posted change in air pressure earlier in the thread (page 1 or 2). I haven't dyno'ed it or done more testing with the stock of Alta intake reinstalled.

>>Water alone won't wash the oil off of a K&N filter - you need the cleaner as well, which smells to me like 409 cleaner.
>>
>>Also, the oil embedded in the filter medium will help to keep water from going through the filter. It will repel a great deal of waterspray.

And from my experience with a completely different discipline, I've run naked K&N elements on Harley intakes for years and never choked an engine in a rainstorm yet. I've nearly drowned myself, but I've never seen any evidence of water getting past the filter element. And those elements are not under a hood and behind a grille, they're sitting right out there in the weather.

Do any national retail chains carry these things or is it mail-order only? (yeah, I want instant gratification.)

TIA,

Jeff

I've never seen the universal filters on the shelf at pep boys but they can usually order them and have them next day if their distributor has them in stock? I ordered the first one from Summit and had it in two days.

I've checked around too. It seems to be a not-so-popular size. Mail order is your best bet...but even then it may be back-ordered. It seems cheese and Andy have created a high demand for this filter!!!!

You are very much like me. I want it NOW!

I went to several parts stores yesterday for Denso IK22 plugs...no such luck! I am the world's worst impulse buyer.

sooo....

what did people do with that extra little line that andy put an oil breather on? just put on an oil breather? anything creative? maybe like one of those stress relief squeeze toys, and it inflates or deflates depending on...? nevermind.

a balloon?! extra boost! har...

STILL waiting for mine to arrive. suggestions on the breather would be helpful so i can have something to stick on there when and if i ever get my filter.
