I'll bet you can stick a plactic elbow in the the bottom of the filter and then attach the the breather line. I am going to use an open breather like in the pictures until I get an Alta catch can installed. Once the catch can is in I will insert the the line as i mention above.

did anyone else have this issue?:

i tried to put the kn 1520 onto the opening for the throttle body, and while the openings match up alright, they cant sit perfectly onto each other, so the kn is kinda sitting there on a slant, and all i can do is just torque the clamp on as tight as it can and hope it doesnt come off? i ask this, cause i did torque it quite well, and i checked it a little later and it had come loose, and was just kind of sitting there, not secure (i could push it a little, and it slipped off...)

is there some kind of adaptor thing that would allow it to sit straight on?

thanks! sounds nice!

so no one else had an issue with the fitment? maybe mine came with a shorter rubber ring thing...

but the way it is now, the bottome of the kn filter is making contact with a part of the throttle body, and wont fit on all the way, and i'm afraid it'll slip off, or worse, rain will get in while i'm driving cause the filters not on all the way...

hmm..

maybe i better get a silicone tube (like the one in the madness intake... hmmm)

when you get your filter (i know...it'll take a while for ajusa... gar), and get around to installing it, could you let us know how it went, and the fitment of the filter onto the throttlebody? mine ended up being a little slanted (as in, on the opening of the throttle body, so it's not on perfectly).

Crap. The track techs are going to want a catch can installed. They will not approve an open air filter for the vent hose. I guess I'll have to finish my catch can project that I started last year.

It seems as though there is room to the right of the TB in the photos.

K&N also makes a couple with an offset of 10'. The flange length is also 3/8" longer. Would this address the problem of the filter sitting slightly cocked and give better clamping on the TB?
Anyone know if the dimensions fit the area?
Would this help with bonnet clearance?
Is a 5" or 6" high filter sufficient area?

Also, RU-1550 exact same size as RU-1520 with a 1 inch flange and a 10' angle. It is available thru my local Pep Boys special order 5-7 days (but slightly more, $45, I think). May give it a go...

I installed the RU1520 today as it finally arrived. I finally got it to fit pretty good. The trick is even though it doesn't fit flush on the throttle body, do not allow the hose clamp to drop while tightening. If you keep it up tight to the bottom of the filter it will tighten up. Also do not over tighten as it will then want to slip off. Mine is very secure now and I love the way the car drives and sounds. It is not at all as loud as I thought it might be. I jsut has a nice S/C whine at about 4K rpm and up. It is not a whole bunch louder than stock. It might make more noise with a pulley but I still have the stock pulley for now.

Any updates or more testing done on this? Love to see the progress of this project.

Also Andy did you set up your own sensors to get the intercooler in and out temps and your other readings or was that availible through OBDII software?

can't say that there is much performance difference. however, the sound is nice, mileage has not taken a turn for the worse, frees up room in the engine bay for "other stuff" and it is only $35.

i found that i got a tighter fit by surround just the seating ring of the throttle body (not the opening though) with a rubber membrane, ie segment of a motorbike innertube. One layer of that, and fit the kn over that, and it is a tighter fit. of course, life could be made easier by fitting a rubber connector sleeve (like with other CAI's) but for the life of me, i could not locate one by itself. gar.

someone is going to try out similar KN models with offsets and see if the fit is any better.

as for numbers, i think the numbers people (as in, with gauges) are off to bigger and better things. so the info we do have is that the temp difference between this and alta are none and the flow difference is that the HAI gets better flow compared to the alta.

Just received my K&N RU-1550 from Pep Boys @ lunch time (okay, so I went a little over ) Will be fitting it in the next couple days, if we don't get carried away at the pub meeting for Bay Minis tonight Looks like it'll fit well. The 10' offset will tilt the top to the right. looking from the front of the car. Maybe this will lower it a bit. I was surprised the offset flannge is about 5/8" on one side and 1" opposite. I take some photos of the filter and post install to put up. Price was $45, btw.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I haven't forgotten about this thread, but I don't have much new to report. The HAI makes swapping the "device" in and out a tool-less and painless proposition.

Thameth,

I have added temp sensors before and after the intercooler:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=23248

I am using prototype logging software to monitor the pressures upstream and downstream of the supercharger (as well as myriad other sensors unsupported by generic OBD-II ).

I have had my HAI on for a little over a week and love it! I don't have any other mods except a zip tied bypass valve. this thing does make power I can feel! The sound is really nice as well. I bet this thing performs as good as anything you can buy. The only down side is it doesn't look as good to me as the Alta. I highly recomend this mod!

Got my HAI installed. Pics will follow. Definite difference according to butt-dyno All I have is impression, not empirical data. But, it feels like it is breathing better as opposed to the restricted feel of the stock setup. Particularly noticeable on higher RPMs which come a bit sooner. Also, a bit more supercharger whine,.......wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Thanks Andy & Cheese. One of the best mods yet.

Okay. I installed my HAI. The engine is certainly more responsive to the throttle. The sound is phenominal. I have a really cool "whoosh" when lifting off the throttle while in boost. For everyone that wanted a blow-off valve sound, this is as close as you get. I installed a boost gauge as well. Curiously, I am only seeing a max of 16lbs????

I have found a great "RACE ONLY" improvement on the HAI.
Here it is:
this creates a direct flow of cold air. It only take three minutes to remove/replace headlight. (three screws). Perfect for the track/dragstrip.

without the hood liner, there is no rubbing...

the bling...

oh, and yes, mucho oil in the intercooler.

Final Solution ...

First of all, this is a great thread, and it has me rethinking the Alta CAI.

I apologize in advance for being lazy, but.....

Is there a single post in this thread that describes the final recommendations for the HAI installation, along with list of parts needed/recommended ??
