Just wondering, I thought it would be really cool to install a guage pod off of my tach that showed Boost and IAT. Can I get IAT easily after the intercooler? Does a probe already exist that I can get temps from or would I have to put one in? The ECU must measure IAT at that point doesn't it?

I would like to measure/monitor IAT with the 15% pulley on track days and then see what it's measuring with the 19% pulley then with air diverter and upgraded intercooler.

there is another one by SP Eng. thats really cool it will do pre and post intercooler temps as well as display the diffrence(helps you get your effecientcy numbers)...and its cheeaper than the others i have checked into...

Sp engineering temp guage

I was interested in something like this as well, but I wonder if it would be cheaper to get a PDA and some sort of pocket logger. I'm not sure if this would allow you to read values real time though.

Does anyone know where the ECU gets intake temps from?

Intake temps for the ECU come from the TMAP sensor in the intake manifold. It measures both temperature and pressure.

I just picked up one of these for $25:

We'll see how it works. I'm gonna install it in a spare rubber intercooler connector.

Seems to respond quickly. I went out for a brief drive and saw 95 C peak (205 F). I'll do some logging with the IAT temp to see how good of a job the intercooler does.

I did some 2nd gear runs (highway runs will have to wait til later) and found the intercooler efficiency to be in the range of 60%-80%. Here are a few data points:

abs in abs out ambient initial diff after diff efficiency
358 314.25 292 66 22.25 66%


abs in abs out ambient
366 314.25 292 74 22.25 70%


abs in abs out ambient
338 300 292 46 8 83%

Andy,
Can you please explain how I'm supposed to read these numbers?
Take the 3rd dataset for example:
(338-46)/(338-8) = 88.5% ?
(292-46)/(292-8) = 86.6% ?
How do you arrive at 83%?

Andy,

I take that you've used the portable gauge to measure the intercooler inlet temp. What about the intercooler exit temp? I have no idea what the TMAP sensor is, and how data can be retreived from that.

It would be great if you could test the large Alta intercooler as well someday :smile:

absolute temp intercooler inlet= 358 K
absolute temp intercooler outlet= 314.25 K
absolute temp ambient= 292 K
inlet - ambient = 66 K
outlet - ambient = 22.25 K
efficiency = 66%

absolute temp intercooler inlet= 366 K
absolute temp intercooler outlet= 314.25 K
absolute temp ambient= 292 K
inlet - ambient = 74 K
outlet - ambient = 22.25 K
efficiency = 70%

absolute temp intercooler inlet= 338 K
absolute temp intercooler outlet= 300 K
absolute temp ambient= 292 K
inlet - ambient = 46 K
outlet - ambient = 8
efficiency = 83%

I logged the TMAP using prototype BiM-COM logging software, but you could get the same data by using a second temp sensor in the intercooler outlet.

Andy,

Thanks so much for clarifying. This information is really useful for comparing intercooler designs! Now given that this data is fairly accurate, it makes me wonder how the large Alta air-to-air claims to be able to drop the charge temp a further 40 kelvin at max? You'll need the intercooler inlet to be over 398 K (125C) for this drop to be possible for the same ambient temp (19C). And given that the temp drop across the stock intercooler would increase with inlet temp, the inlet temp would need to be in the 420K range

What would be the max intercooler inlet temp we can expect from the stock pulley, 15% or 19%?

I ordered a second temp gauge for the intercooler outlet, so I can keep an eye on those temps even when I don't have the laptop seatbelted into the passenger seat (not often). :smile:

I haven't done any IC efficiency calculations at fully warmed up highway speeds ... yet.

Yeap i got the Sp guages, i mounted the sensors in the intercooler just passed the rubber boot that fits to the intake peices, I should have mounted in the intake pieces to be able to change intercoolers to see there effects, but I really like my custom water to air and dont think i will be changing it, i also mounted a water temp guage to monitoer the water in the intercooler, to see how it changes and reacts.. illpost some results when i get the car back together from modding the supercharger, so far i have got as much as 98d (F) temp diffrence from inlet to outlet, but i will make a couple of runs around to give more details....

I just got my second cheapie gauge - YAY! Now I can see both inlet and outlet at the same time.

Here's Caddman's numbers:

Idle 68 76 111 79 -31

inlet - ambient = 111 - 68 = 43 F
outlet - ambient = 79 - 68 = 11 F
efficiency = 75%

Hwy (80mph)68 72 149 91 -45
cruising

inlet - ambient = 149 - 68 = 81 F
outlet - ambient = 79 - 68 = 23 F
efficiency = 72%

Hard ACCEL 68 80 191 101 -90
from stoplight

inlet - ambient = 149 - 68 = 123 F
outlet - ambient = 101 - 68 = 33 F
efficiency = 73%
