Revving up when coming to a stop

Today I was pulling into a parking spot, had my foot on the brake and the engine suddenly revved up as though I had floored it. I had to stand on the brake and put it into park and turn off the engine. This exact same thing happened a few years ago. I was definately applying the brake, and not hitting the throttle with my heel.
Might I have a pedal position sensor problem? This is only the second time in five years this has happened, but not something I want to take lightly for obvious reasons.

Thanks in advance

Did you check whether the floor mat slid forward against the accelerator pedal? Is the floor mat unsecured?

Did any warning lights appear on the dashboard or center screen?

Did you look for fault codes with a code reader or scan tool?

Have you noticed any brake problems?

M,mn thanks for the reply

I don't have accessory mats, so stock mat is secure.
Didn't notice any lights or warnings - too busy trying to rein in the little guy.
Scan with both Torque and Bimmerlink; no codes.
Brakes are working fine.

Anything unique features about your shoes, boots, or sneakers that would allow the right edge of your shoe to catch on the left edge of gas pedal while pressing hard on the brake pedal?

I was pressing lightly pulling into the parking spot. I only pressed hard on the brake after the engine sped up.
I thought about that the first time it happened, and no. I had sneakers on both times. I will, when I get some time see if I can while it's parked.
