I wouldn't think so. It's just easier to use a breather filter. Just put it over the line and clamp it down. With the angled "nipple" you will need to drill? into or place it at the buttom of the filter. Overall, I think it would look "cleaner," but I personally like the look of the big filter with the "baby" breather filter, which are both K&N btw.

Personal taste is all, I'm sure.

One way you perform as a better polluter than the other

I'm assuming routing it back into the jumbo K&N is "cleaner" for the environment?

What size?

Hey all awesome thread. Ok I've read all 23 pages and I still
have some questions if you guys can help.

1. I have '06 MCSa, I've seen 3 filter sizes named.
What should I go with 1520, 1540, 1550?

2. What's the con of going with the chrome vs. rubber?
Heat?

3. Breather filter size?

4. In the 23 pages I might have seen this but can't find it.
Any pro/con with a K&N Typhoon style.

5. Curious. What about just cutting a hole in the stock box?

Many Thanks

Studog

1. 1550.

2. Chrome vs. Rubber? On what?

5. You could do that, but why? This is $35.

Hole in stock box = colder air.

2-- I think your refering to the hose between the TB and the Filter...If so that leads me to
4-- I've been told that the metal tube attracts heat from the engine and warms the air, that it's a poor design, uhh...not sure what else but basically gets a bad vibe here on NAM. I use one and think it's just fine. I have my reasons why I went with a metal tube. Plus it has a CARB# unlike any other system (I heard alta is working on getting a CARB#) There's a dyno sheet in my gallery with the K&N system as my intake. Hope this helps! -- Johan

Chorme vs. Rubber (not the hose)

On the 1550 etc filters, the end caps come either in rubber or chrome.

All the posted picts show the filters with rubber caps. So I was wondering
if it was a heat issue or not.

Get the RC-1540 http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=RC-1540

Compared to the 1550 it's only 1" shorter and I doubt that will make a performance difference. Besides it gets you the chrome and you can get a matching chrome filter for the vent or it will do a better job of holding an inlet bung for the vent line.

Now here's an option

One question, do you know a part number for a breather filter?
I'm hoping to order today so I can do it this weekend.

Thanks again

This one should work
I'm pretty sure the fitting that goes into the intake tube is .5" OD. This unit has a flange ID of .563. Should work fine.... and it's chrome

A heads up though. These vent filters will get dirty/oil saturated fast when being used like this.

I am pretty sure (which means you are NOT allowed to blast me if I'm wrong!!!) someone posted somewhere in these 23 pages that the hose was ID 1/2" and OD 3/4".

Why, whatever do you mean.
The 3/4" OD is dead on. I went out a put a caliper on it and got 20mm.
Wanted to make sure I wasn't talking poo. ID is 13mm.

Thanks for confirming. I'd hate to have studog order something and it not fit.

I'm going to do the elbow back into the bottom of the K&N - probably this weekend. I'll try to calibrate the butt dyno before then.

ok so here I am... finally got my 1550 today and planning on picking up some torx drivers this weekend. I went on the ross-tech site to see if I could find something out as far as install instructions and it turns out they are about 2000 feet from my old apartment and 13 minutes from my work. small world!

so Andy, have any interest in messing with a bone stock '06? lol
not that I don't think I can figure this one out, but if you ever need another car to test something with I'm sure I can accomodate considering I'm in montgomeryville.

ok... I put it on today during lunch in about 10 minutes. I didn't have the breather filter yet so I just twisted the stock hose up and laid it in the airbox. I then ran to pep boys and grabbed a breather that I'll put on tonight at my parents' garage where all my tools are. Unfortunately I work in a congested area so I could only give it a little bit of a test on the way to wawa and pep boys. I'm looking forward to my trip home in 20 minutes though!

Just installed my HAI. took about 30 minutes excluding a drive to the hardware store to buy a hose clamp. Driving results: Nice! Not overly loud in the cockpit, even with the windows down and the sun roof open but my family said they could hear the whine as I was driving up the hill to our house!!

I opted to have the breather hose enter the bottom of the filter. Buoght this PVC elbow at Pep Boys for $3. Installed it by cutting a hole in the bottom of the filer with an exacto knife. I'm very please how it turned out!

I'd give this mod an A+ due to its low cost and added driving fun!

OK, I installed mine. Now for the little treat. I took video of a rev from 3k to redline with both the stock (K&N drop in filter) set up and the HAI set up. I also did a butt dyno run through 1st and 2nd gears, both with the stock and HAI setups. If anyone wants to host it, shoot me a PM. It's about 4.5 MB.
