I am going to help my son repalce the valve cover gasket on his 2011 Clubman on Friday. While we are in there is there anything else we should look at doing?

why are you replacing the gasket?

you could check the chain guides for chips, cracks, or missing pieces.

Given the location, there isn't much else to do "while you are in there" except check the chain and guides, as MiniToBe mentioned. If you haven't done the spark plugs in a while, you could do those, check for oil on the plugs, and inspect the ignition coils.

This all started with a bad coil. Will be replacing the plugs. Is it worth changing the coils as a PM given that one of the original 4 has failed.
Will take a look at tht chain guide while in there. what are the of it being damaged? Should I have one on hand?

I never change coils unless one fails and I get misfires. If you had a bad coil, you likely know the symptoms. The coils are easy to swap on these cars, so I would wait. For the chain and guides, you really need to inspect before ordering anything. If the guides are broken or badly chewed up, you have a bigger job to tackle, so again, I would wait and inspect for wear.

Also, is your VCG leaking? One bad coil does not mean you have to replace the VCG.

DId the work this morning./ NO special issues. We decided to replace all of the coils because that is what my son wanted to do but but I agree with the comments above. Replacing a coil is easy so replace as needed.
Appreciate everyones comments.
