Do you need to use gasket sealer with a valve cover gasket?

re: 2013 Mini Cooper N16

I want to remove the valve cover to inspect the timing chains guides. I have a new gasket on he way however I can see some sealer seeped out on the corners of the valve cover gasket opposite the timing chain. The dealer replaced the gasket in January for the previous owner.

Where should the sealant be applied and what type should I use?

Thanks!

I used a dab of Permatex 81160 High-Temp Red RTV Silicone at the two corners. It's been good for 40K miles.

Thank you. Only those 2 corners? Anywhere else?

I did the same, and didn't put any sealant anywhere but the two corners.

Yes, just the two corners. Full procedure shown here and check the last pic for the location of the sealant. Very easy procedure. I bought new bolts in case one snapped so if you break one let me know. Mine were all good. Go slow and use a torque wrench to finish.

Thanks guys for your responses. I ended up buying the stuff the dealer uses “Drie Bond”? Worked great.

Thanks again!
