so this may be a silly post, but before I bought my Mini I read a ton of threads here about problems that the Mini's may have. I have only had the car for a week, so I may have just noticed this for the first time. But today after driving, it sounds like there is some sort of rattle? Im not sure if it is the intercooler? and if so, if it is no big deal? just worry about the timing chain and tensioner, as I know if those go...all hell breaks loose. so im sorry if this is an overzealous post, just want to make sure all is well! Oil is fine by the way, checked that first.

check your belt and belt tensioner. also have somone rev it a bit and see if it follows

 

I'm not exactly hearing any rattling. Sounds like regular lifter noise. If your timing chain tensioner was going, then while starting up the car, you would hear the chain loudly slapping the tensioner.

 

that is another option, doesnt sound much like anything other than normal valve train, check your oil level

 

For whats it's worth these are "ticky" sounding motors.

agree with others, think its just the valves and moving bits inside the engine.

 

Mine had some ticking near the #1 cylinder. Turned out to be the pcv valve. Pull the hose off the valve cover and put your thumb over the house so the engine doesn't get mad and see if the ticking stops. My new pcv valve is quiet.

 

ok sounds good. and on the inside it almost sounds like a helicopter, and not sure if this is related but once i push in the clutch, the noise disappears?

 

Rattling throwout bearing....most likely cause of the sound if it goes away when you depress the clutch....pretty basic stuff...not sure WHY nobody said it...
Some can rattle for years/months....but a sudden change can mean issue...
If it comes apart, it can bounce around, and destroy the transmission case....
You get a new one when the clutch is replaced...both are ALWAYS done at the same time...same labor to do either.
Sound is pretty normal...
Some is the "egg beater" sound from the sc...the change you hear clutch in/clutch out is the throwout bearing....

 

Nobody said it because he DIDN'T mention it until his last post. I agree it is very likely that it is the throw out bearing or potentially the input shaft bearing.

 

so this is something that is pretty bad/expensive? is it something that would be covered by the dealer? i have only had it for a little over a week, and it did come with a 90 day powertrain warranty..have an appointment with my local Mini dealer for an inspection,so I will ask them as well

 

I don't know if a throw out bearing will be covered by the warranty since it is part of the clutch and is a wear item. But definitely give it a shot and find out.
