I haven't used the tool for the Mini, but I have used it for my e36 bmw. It works easily, seems to be idiot proof as far as insertion goes, and I find it very useful. Especially when you start doing your own maintenance.
I don't know about the warranty, but I never had any issues with the M.

I have one, works great, I was able to use it to prove the MINI tech at the dealer wrong, he swore my car had a broken valve spring, even though the tool said it was a fuel injector problem. Guess what, it was a bad contact on the injector plug.

Do yo have one of these? It seems to be a great bang for the buck

I sure do.
Here are some graphs I captured using it. (I wrote my own software
to capture the data. Sorry about that)
Speed vs RPM:

Ignition advance vs speed:

Speed, throttle and fuel closed-loop:

Coolant temp:

Seems a lot cheaper, but does it do the same diagnostic type things that the other one does?

The disadvantage to the scantool.net product is that you need a computer to access the information.
The Peak unit is just plug-n-go.
You pay for that feature with dollars and not getting the ability to capture data.

Right.... Well, that unit looks very cool... I'm becoming interested in it now... I have been thinking more and more about how I need to start doing my own maintenance, and I do have a laptop that I can connect it to... Hmmm
Thanks!
Thanks!

Peake makes an SRS reset tool, but I don't know if it works with the MINI.
I bought one to reset the SRS light on my '94 BMW (which was on because I turned the key on with steering wheel off while diagnosing an instrument cluster problem.
http://www.peakeresearch.com/srstool.htm
As for the R5/EMX I would assume that it is the same in use as the R5/FCX that I have for my BMW.
It is very easy to use. Can read codes, clear codes, and reset oil and mileage service intervals.
I just with the SRS and FCX tool where all one tool, as they go on the same plug. For that matter, there is no
reason the FCX and EMX can't be the same tool, as 2001 and newer BMWs have the same diagnostics plug as the MINI.

So, is there anything like a VAG-COM device VW's use for the Mini or other BMW's? This lets you not only see and interpret the codes, but also lets you write settings back into the ECU (called "adaptation"
. VAG-COM installs on a laptop and displays all the data on screens. It can also capture live data during test drives.
I'd sure like to be able to set the convinence options on the mini like DRL's, Key Fob controls of windows/locks, and all the other things without having to go to the dealer and pay $50 (required if you don't go to your car purchase location).
