Help with factory sound system

I recently bought a non running 09 Clubman inexpensively, and now that I’ve got the battery charged it will run on 3 cylinders, I expect the head will come off for valve repairs. The purpose of this post is regarding the factory stereo. No power or display, which is a common ailment. I’ll check the fuse behind the radio but don’t expect it to be that easy. It will likely have to be removed and repaired or replaced. Questions for the collective:
1) can just the radio be replaced or does it have to be the whole unit including the speedo head?
2) I’m reading that the car usually needs a computer update after this repair? Always true? Why?
3) there are several used factory radios available on eBay for cheap. Will they plug and play or is there more to it?

Educate me please.

Used factory radio will have to be coded for the system. Aftermarket systems such as android systems are a b**** to install and work right. What system you have, standard or hifi?

Thank you ECSTuning. I am brand new to Mini terminology. LCI is....?? I think I will probably just send out my existing unit for repair. There seems to be a reputable person on eBay offering repair of these sound systems for about $250 including shipping both ways. It may save some unexpected coding...

Hello again folks. I am still wrestling with the non working sound system in this car and am prepared to purchase some replacement parts. But. I'm unsure as to which part(s) I may need. The radio display does not work, and there is no sound. The CD player accepts a disc but there is no sound. There are no chimes for the "door ajar" or "lights on". So what part actually needs replacing? The display unit behind the speedo? Or??? I recognize I may have to recode whatever I install. I could use some guidance on this... please....

Follow up info on this. I sourced a used radio and speedo combo for this car. The re and re was under 2 hours which I thought was decent for my first go round. I’d probably cut that in half next time. The radio plugged in and worked straight away but the BT and phone would not even show on the menu. I had the unit coded to my car by an indy shop. Note to those going through this: this is kind of first gen phone connectivity in this era so don’t expect the same functionality as a new car. For example, you cannot text through the car system.
The speedo was a direct plug and play. I’m in Canada and have a USA import MCS with a mph speedo. I plugged in a kph speedo without issue.
Hope this helps someone else along the way.

So, are the phone and BT working now, after coding? I have the stock radio in mine, too. I paid a small fortune to add a 10 inch subwoofer, amp and a type of DSP. It makes a huge difference in sound quality.

Hi Kat, yes the BT and phone now work as they did (10 years ago!). Not all Mini's had the BT and phone capability even if they had the multifunction buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. If you search "Mini VIN decoder" on the interweb you will find sites that will be able to tell you what your car came with when it was new, so you can confirm if you've got the capability. Also, the Mini "phonebook" is not the same as your contact list on your phone. You have to add to the Mini phonebook in a different fashion, which I am still perfecting (the rules are different between the standard radio set up or if you have nav included). What I am planning to do next is get a phone/GPS holder for my car so the phone can be in a mounted position. For texting i will just "hey Siri, text XXX..." That seems to go through the car's sound system since the phone is connected to the car's BT. I suspect you could do "OK Google..." if you have an Android phone with same result...

Glad you got it figured out. Mine has BT, a bit more sophisticated than yours, I guess. My phone book imported into the car’s display. I don’t have the nav, so attached a phone holder mount to the dash, right under the rear view mirror, for my IPhone 11 Pro Max, and use it for navigation. As for the phone buttons on the steering wheel, I haven’t figured it out. I answer and end calls, via the right radio button. The display lets me know who is calling.
