The gearbox does not shift.

Hey. Can you help me with my Mini Cooper?

The gearbox works very strange. It shifts to 2nd gear, but does not turn on 3rd, and on the tachometer the arrow goes off scale for 3000. Is this gearbox gone? Or could there be something else?

Cable end came off above the transmission or under the tunnel shifter. Most of the time the end link pops off the end of the cable above the transmission Check that first. .

Which year/model is it?

No matter which it is though, first step is to take off battery / air box (depending on year/model) and inspect the shifter linkage. Have someone go through the gears and see if the linkage properly engage all gears on the gearbox itself. Most probably, the linkage needs replacement, which is a lot faster and cheaper than changing a gearbox.

That being your first NAM post, welcome to the forum...

What model year and build date (check VIN plate under the bonnet)? If mid-year 2004 or older, might well be the shifter cables are shot. After that date (running change I believe), improved design for cables and shifter box assy. If yours is the earlier version and cause of your shifting woes, you'll need to replace both the cables and shifter box to the later style. New OEM parts are still available (but not as complete assy), however buying a used combo would be prudent instead. AllMag has one from a donor R53/R52 listed for $300. Watch forum member Mod Mini's tutorial video and see if that helps determine. IMO, much better that than the Getrag gearbox...

Oh, thats a transmission gear issues/shift problem. Something internal that 3rd is most likely gone. You would have to take it to a transmission shop to further diagnosis or MINI. Lots of the internals are not on its own and i believe that a flush is not going to fix that. Its a Aisin 6 speed transmission made for MINI. Very similar to the VW one but not exactly the same.

Maybe a solenoid went bad and you would be lucky, maybe valve body and something is clogged/stuck?

Yes, its really had to tell. Some people do a flush if they have hard shift, this is completely missing a gear out of 3rd and revving out. Some people do a flush but cant bet thats going to work.

Check this out below.
