I need someone to list the pros and cons of Pandora vs MOG in order to make a better informed decision. Granted, it's access to virtually everything out there, artist-only stations, and (presumably) no ads(?). I imagine that offline downloads only work if you buy and use their app. The MOG Discovery Mode appears to be less sophisticated than Pandora's musical taxonomy. And an extra $120 per year? Ouch.

 

So far heres what I've found

MOG advantages -
-Listen to exactly what you want, when you want
-Build a library of your favorite artists, albums and songs
-Create playlists
-Pandora like radio functionality with the ability to set it to 'artist only' or 'include similar artists'(the latter essentially the same thing as pandora)
-no ads
-can download songs locally if desired for offline mode(at HQ 320kb data rate)
-can use the web app to build your library

MOG disadvantages -
-$10 a month required to work with mini connected
-the 'queue' functionality is not very intuitive.

Pandora advantages -
-simple UI
-free

Pandora disadvantages -
-low bit rate with the free service(audible difference IMO compared to MOG)
-limited 'skips' or 'dislikes' per day(12 I think)

 

yeah comparing the two would be like comparing an antenna tv that you cant change the channel on to a 70" 1080 3D screen with the everything package. so much more functionality

 

PS if your worried about the $120 a year than you need a more reliable car. cause mini's are expensive my friend

 

There is no ads.

It is worth the $120 a year because it isnt just car functionality you are receiving.. you are also getting it on your phone and unlimited on your PC.. (Well Unlimited everywhere)

I highly recommend it. Likewise you can download the music onto your phone and go out of the country and STILL listen to it since it will be downloaded.

So awesome. It is all the music you will ever want.

 

I guess it's not so much the $120 itself as it is the cost of the additional capability over the available free services. Believe me, I've been mending and modding multiple MINIs over many years and know the costs, my friend.

I've since done quite a bit of research since my earlier post into the competing business models (i.e., iTunes Match, Pandora, Spotify, etc.). I can see why folks who might be heavily invested in iTunes and "own" thousands of $$ worth of tracks would be reluctant to flush their considerable investment for a streaming service in which the music is essentially "rented." In my case, I haven't spent large sums on iTunes music purchases so it's not a factor.

I also don't fully buy the argument made by some reviewers that if a streaming service provider like MOG eventually went belly-up, or a new technology came on the scene, you'd be stuck with nothing. The fundamental music (the albums and tracks) will always be out there in cyberspace and available through some sort of service, and I wouldn't think twice about jumping ship from MOG to a new provider if something better came along. Now those people who are power audiophiles and would lose their playlists, playcounts, song ratings, custom album art, playlist subscriptions, and social connections might feel differently. I don't really rely on all of that extra stuff.

Certainly if you live in an area where the connectivity is reliable, MOG seems like a much better investment than a satellite radio subscription given that many of the talk, sports, and news stations are accessible via MINI Connected Web Radio. Probably not Howard Stern though...

One other MOG negative I just discovered...it forces you into establishing a Facebook identity to sign up for the service.

 

Do you have to update the mini connect to get MOG?

 

Nope you just download mog. It's a $10 a month music service

 

You can.. and then you can delete your facebook right after. I linked it to my FB and then removed the link and now I login just by the email that I used to login to Facebook but it has no connection to it at all anymore.

Spotify does the same thing now for new users and forces those people to establish new accounts on Facebook as well. Only early adopters got out of it

 

It never had me do anything with facebook

 

Anyone noticing slow performance with MOG? The last few days it's gotten really spotty for me. Sometimes won't even load up a song I select, just does nothing.

 

Yes I have; and I see on their website that they're doing maintenance between 11 pm and 3 am tonight -- maybe (hopefully) to mitigate the issues.

 

Excuse me if this has been asked before - a quick scan and I couldn't find it.

I can easily find my video podcasts on my iPhone via mini connected - but I cannot find any of my non-video podcasts.

Am I blind and not looking someplace obvious?

 

I use it!! Haven't seen many others... kinda depressing. I think its a great app.

 

Anyone have any luck finding a longer Y cable? I'd like to stash the phone in the little cubby under the parking brake and not in the cup holder or area behind them.

I'd like to know the Chinese source of a longer y cable as long as the cable that we are speaking about is the same as BMW part #61122179623 which is the cable you need if you have Mini Connect (which is what the thread is about I know)...

I got a USB extender and a Stereo 3.5mm extender. I couldn't find a 3-band 3.5mm extender, so I can't use the plugin with it, but since I don't use the plugin anyway, I'm happy.

On monoprice.com it was like $4 for both extenders.
