HTC Touch is great for me. Don't know if you can get it with Verizon. Only thing is voice dialing. Doesn't read the phone AB. You need to create one manually in the Mini system. Everything else works like a charm

We can not tell you what is a good phone for you. There are many features on all the phones. What i like in a phone would be a phone, No Text messaging, No Camera, No extra features, just a phone. But unfortunately that can not be found so i have had to comprimise and think aobut hwat else i could use the phone for. Well after doing that the only phones i liked were the LG enV2 or LG Voyager and for over two weeks with each phone i could not get them to work with the Mini so i went back to my old phone as i hated the ohters that worked like the RAZR or the MOTO. So again pick out a phone you like and maybe some ohter phones as well so you have a list. Ten check them against the list nicknbecka has so gracioulsy provided for all of us.

You're probably not as cheap as me, but when my Verizon account was up for renewal and I was entitled to a free phone, I chose the Verizon Motorola W385. It's probably last year's model but it synched with my MINI with almost no hassle at all. In fact, it was ten times harder getting the garage remote to work.

I just got the iphone 3G (2.1 Firmware) and based on everyone's comments on this thread that have the same, they have not had any issues. For some reason, the voice quality is not that good when I use it in my MC compared to the 1st generation iPhone. Callers tell me that I sound choppy and hard to understand. Has anyone else experienced this? TIA

It may have something to do with volume levels. I do not actually have an iPhone but there are others that have reported that they needed to adjust volumes while in a call on the iPhone.

Again this may or may not account for it.

Also have you moved the microphone from the passenger side to the drivers side. This made a world of difference in my phone. If not check out this thread.

Pardon me for jumping in to this late, but I don't understand why some people claim some phones work and some don't. If your phone has bluetooth, it should work. Period. If you can pair your phone with a bluetooth headset, there's no reason why it shouldn't work in the MINI. If I'm way off base here, please enlighten me.

Not way off base, just a little

Theoretically, that may be true. In reality, it only guarantees that the two devices can connect. Once they're connected things get sketchy.

The Bluetooth specifications offer a number of different profiles for exchanging data, and none of them are actually required to be offered on the phone to be Bluetooth compatible. For example, it could just have the headset profile and not what is needed to exchange the address book.

Other profiles have what might be considered varying levels of compatibility. For example, the OPP profile is used by the MINI for exchanging the address book, but it doesn't require that specific types of objects be usable by the device. The specification lists vCard (v2.1 IIRC) for exchanging contact information, but even then it seems that manufacturers screw it up. Some are released broken and fixed with firmware updates later, and others start out working and get broken with updated firmware.

Update on Samsung SCH-i760 and WM6.1 Upgrade

Your's is the first I've seen for a Windows Media phone, so it may be an issue with all of them?

Also according to MINI's PDFs in some phones it just lists the first thousand or so, in others it makes for problems with the Bluetooth connection.

I can answer when the radio is playing and the radio mutes.

It the less good category: Because the WM6.1 upgrade wiped my link to the company exchange server I had to reinput that. Again I "repaired" My contacts database is huge (1900+) and the car 'gagged' on it, i.e., when I try to look at the phone's directory it tries for a bit but then just returns to the main phone menu.

I spoke with BMW (the number in the radio/phone) and the person there indicated there is a limit of numbers that the car can inport probably about 1000. She thought if the import was working properly the first 1000 numbers from my handset should have been imported... so she doesn't believe its properly linking.

Thanks again for your help.

The phone is working properly and *at least* 1000 numbers have been imported . I have run across at least one number which is in the phone and not listed in the car memory, but I can't see a pattern.

I"m sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Thank you for setting me on the right path with the WM6.1 upgrade.

No worries, glad to hear that it's working out- at least a little better.

We've got other reports of the Alias syncing the address book- which carrier are you with?

I would consider getting a Motorola phone. Other than the I-Phone and Blackberry, it appears to be the only manufacturer that works more times than not.

Phones running Windows Media 6 are also good bets.

LG Chocolate 3 works

At least as well as my old VX8600 worked (which makes sense since the two are nearly identical except for the scroll wheel on the front). Phone book syncs but voice dialing has to be manually set up.

UNFORTUNATELY I swapped it out for a Dare, and have just discovered (as others previously reported) that the phone book DOES NOT SYNC! I am SO MAD at myself for not checking here first...and SO MAD at LG for being so money-hungry that they would intentionally mess with their software to force buyers to use their products.

This may be the last LG I buy unless they change their ways. I've been very loyal to them, but this may push me away.

This thread was a great help to me when I was preparing to take delivery of my MINI. Just wanted to report back that so far (a little over a month) the Treo 700p (Verizon's my carrier) is still working well. Favorites load right in. I don't / can't use the voicedial since it's an add-on feature for the phone. It's easy enough for me to select the person I want to call from the display. Sound-wise, all's well. In fact, recipients tell me it's clear on their end even if I have the windows down.

No phonebook with the Dare

Not a surprise to those of you interested in using the Dare. The weird thing I discovered over the weekend is that the phonebook from the Dare DOES work in a BMW. Had a loaner car while Waldo was being serviced, and I paired the Dare to the Bimmer, and lo and behold, the phonebook worked! So irritating that it does not work in the MINI.

Asked the SA if there was any updated software for the MINI, but he said that MINI has never issued any sort of update to it. I guess the BMW Bluetooth prgramming is just enought different than the MINI that it won't work.

Compatible phones with the '09 Mini

Does anyone know what phone works (pairs as well as transferring the phone book) with the '09 Mini. I'm on my second phone. The first was the Moto W755 - paired but didn't transfer data and it kept "searching for device." And now I have the LG Dare and the phone book again will not transfer. I've been reading posts and have read that both of my phones have worked for other people so I'm assuming it has something to do with the car being a 2009. Thanks, Ozzie.

say it isn't so...

I bought the Moto Q9C because it is so compatible with Mini's bluetooth. I'm taking delivery of my '09 any day now. I sure hope there isn't going to be problems with compatibility. I assumed the 09's would be the same as the 08's with regard to the BT. Motorola seemed the safest best.

I'm past the 30 day period to switch out phones with Verizon so I sure hope it works.

I'll update upon delivery.

Hi Ozzie, as far as we know, there's no compatibility differences between any of the R56's based on the car's birthday. Cars without Nav do seem to need manual voice tags, but that's the only condition I've been able to identify. 09's pretty recent though, so I wouldn't rule this out but we probably won't know until we start to see more reports that don't match other cars.

The Dare is known to not work, particularly with firmware versions ending in v03.

No ideas on the W755 though, I don't know of it ever having problems and every post I can find says it works. Do you still have this phone? Any chance you could try it with another MINI?

Yes, I still have the W755. I just tried to pair it again with my mini (I do have nav) and the same problem was occurring. It paired ok the first time and downloaded my phonebook. After you shut your off and restart it, it continually asks you if you want to "allow it to transfer data." You respond yes and it searches out your bluetooth and sometimes finds it and sometimes does not. Either way, while on a call, this interrupts the communication.

Again, if anyone knows of a phone that does work (I have Verizon), please recommend some phones. I have one more shot and exchanging this phone to one that might work. Thanks again.

Has anyone noticed if the www.wireless4mini.com site has changed recently. I could have sworn that they recently updated the compatible phones for Verizon and had six or seven (including a palm!) that were approved for the MINI.

Today, I went there and they were back to only three compatible phones under Verizon. Anyone know what's up with that?

I have no idea, but they don't list my basic LG VX5300 and it has always worked perfectly. But of course, they may not even sell that phone anymore.

The whole find a phone that works thing is frustrating, but thank goodness for nicknbecka's spreadsheet.

Do Not take any stock in what www.wireless4mini.com has to say.

All of the black berries seem to work very well, as do many of the Motorola Phones.

Also the list is behind the times by about 6-8 month anyway.

Please also note that Mini/BMW farms the testing out to another company that reports their findings back to MINI/BMW. Now they do not test all phones in all the cars.

There was also a change in the company that does the testing back in June/July sometime.

The old company only tested one model of BMW and one MINI for each production year. Then they only tested phones that were available when that model year was introduced. So by the time the first changes are made during a model year all the data was out dated, and the web site was only updated once a year.

The new company seems to be doing a little more testing but still does not seem to report it in a timely manner.

Also if you look at the data sheets for the Blackberry 8130 listed there. They show that it was tested on a Mini Cooper Dec 2006 and on a Mini Clubman September 2007 (note that is at least 5 months before there were introduced to the US market) But guess what the Motorola V3 was tested onteh same cars and the Motorola V9M was tested on september 2007 and september 2007.

And then two of the three phones are no longer available with Verizon (at least in my area).

The bigest factor in tesing the phones is the ability to test the phones with all variations of the car, I.E. Nav, Non-Nav, differnet bluetooth pakages etc. Then there is the problem of phone firmware. It chagnes constantly. LG for instance has updated the Voyager software three times in the past 12 months crippling the phone more and more each time.

Conclusion. Mini vs. carrier vs. phone = to many changes to keep up with.
