Here are the messages . . .

The first message was "Unable to set the COM timeouts." Clicked "OK and then received "Fault at serial construction."

Hmmm. . . . virtual COM Port set to 5 and Com port 5 selected for the software. Guess I'll retry . . .

Then receive the following message, "Echo is missing: Adapter available?", after clicking OK then I receive, "startCommunication_Request do not send"

So I would like to meet up with someone and try their interface box and see if mine is screwed up. I may just have to make the trip to Richards later this week after I get the car back.
[/QUOTE]

I am getting the same messages from my adapter. I wonder if it is another defective cable from Sacha?

I got those error messages when I used Sasha cable, I have since used the Sensolution cable without a problem.

suspect the cable

Seems like I did everything right, but it must be the cable. Oh well, I guess my MINI and I can wait.

OK, so got a question for you all- how bad would it be if I didn't flash my ECU back to stock before I took it in for scheduled service??!?!

You don't need to flash it for your car to go in for service. I have taken mine with it flashed and haven't heard a word when it went for its 10k service.

I got mine in for services many times with MTH loaded and never had any problem! The tech also plugged his computer to my MINI and never saw the MTH sitting there...

Worst case, they'll erase your MTH while flashing your ECU to a newest version...

The only time you might be concerned is if they are performing the recall update to ver 39.1 (I believe). Otherwise, if that emissions update has been done, don't sweat it.

Hey Richard about your MTH response:

Would they advise me during my service if they are performing the recall update to ver 39.1??!?!.... sorry just a little nervous.

If you haven't brought your car in for the emissions update (I think its 2004 and earlier) then they will do it automatically. They will see that it hasn't been done and will perform it.

You can ask them when you take it in--they can check against your VIN number to see.

Not sure if this has been answered/questioned yet, but I read somewhere that after you install the MTH you need to reset the ECU. Is this true? I haven't and so far it "seems" as though the powerband is more evened out. I do know that the rev limited was bumped to 7200RPM and supposedly the speed limiter is killed...

I didn't the first time I put MTH on my car and I noticed some difference. The second time I did and the car relearned how it worked with the MTH and my driving habit and I think it drives a bit better now.

Howdy, MTHers. Looking to try MTH. Bought & obtained a KEYCODE & Senso's MONO-USB.

Q: Do I need to know my current ECU version before I can download & upload it to Franz? [It changed recently due to the MINI Recall.]
&
Q: Would Franz want to know if I go with colder plugs? [Don't have them yet.]

Running: 15% & ALTA CAI

Q: Y'all recommend I go w/ cooler IK22 plugs when adding MTH?

Thanks in advance, all!

I don't believe you need to know your ECU version.
To be safe I would let Franz know of all your modifications.
Cooler plugs for MTH - I dunno. Cooler plugs for smaller SC Pulley - yes.
I didn't change my plugs but I will when my current ones go bad.

Thanks, stryder209. Anxious to get going, - need a buddy's PC lappy.

Q: I take it, I shouldn't attempt this via a PowerBook?

Q: Anyone know Franz's turn-around time these days?

You're welcome!
It's PC software so it won't run on a Powerbook!
I sent my files to Franz about 2-3 weeks ago and got them back 3 days later.

BTW: My laptop doesn't have a serial port and I borrowed a serial port version so I had the fun of lugging my desktop and monitor to the garage!

Like strider209 said on the pc.

First update took 3 days. 2nd took less then an hour. But I think it depends on when you send it. I believe he is 5-6 hours time zones ahead of Eastern Time Zone. So if you said it late at night out time you get it back quick. But then again I sent mine @ 2pm and got it before 3pm. So I guess its when he is free.

Thanks

Thanks to all who have posted here with hints and tips. I definitely had a defective cable, so I ordered one from sensolutions and it worked fine, although every time I connect the first attempt generated error messages. But the second time I tried to ID it always worked.

Anyway, sent the files to Franz last night about 11 pm and he had them back by about 9:30. The upload went flawlessly. With my K&N typhoon and the MTH my engine really whines! You would swear there is a turbo in there. While I doubt I'll be breaking any speed records, shift points are definitely reached faster and the hesitation between shifts is gone. Whether it is really a lot faster is inconsequential because the sound and feelings are fabulous. Who needs a radio. Definitely put a bigger smile on my face.

Thank You

Excellent tips & insights, gents.

Sugarbelly's runnin' so smoooth.

We used Sensolutions' USB, at Com Port 5. It originally showed-up on Com Port 4. [My bud switched it to 5, saying 1-3 & 2-4 share properties which may not jive perfectly with USB, whereas 5 is independent... if that's helpful.]

Anywho...it synched & worked. ID & Download went perfectly.

Upload to Franz went well, - although Franz's page doesn't exactly make you believe the upload went through. [We emailed the .mim & .org as well.]

Out by 8pm SAT.

Back, new & improved from BMW-fatherland early SUN morning (3AM).

Upload of new .mth file took 3 attempts. Very close to finishing the first time before posting a program fault.

Then it timed-out. [Unhooked & powered off the lappy for a fresh start.]

... Success.

I can't say we felt a 10-12hp gain .

Immediately we heard it sound & run much more smoothly. Transitions between gears, - like sjwass said, "hesitation between shifts is gone." It feels as though BMW & MINI each sent their top mechanics to personally dial-in Sugarbelly. A fine, fine thing, MTH.

Satisfaction.

It is having the CARTUNE software & your own cable which adds so much value to this eprom flash approach.
&
price? FUHgetABOUTit!

I'd pay Franz twice what he asks.

Does Franz offer a race gas setting?

Race Petrol

Sure. Why not?

I'd be surprised if Franz couldn't accomodate your fuel requests, spillman. Email him your parameters & see.

It should just "autotune" faster after refash.

Since the adaptive tuning looks to your O2 sensors, it should end up with the same trim, just taking longer without the reset. Some have found that things like stumbles went away faster with the reset.

After installing colder plugs "Denso IK22" do I need to send off for another update?

From what I've read, there's no need to update your MTH software after changing for colder plugs...

But make sure to send your stock files to Franz... He came out with a new and improved MTH version that is supposed to be awesome... That's what he said on MTH support forum (MINImods.us)...
