Here's our new Burgundy/Liquid Silver 2017 All4 S with Gray Lounge Leather, Sunroof and 17" black rims with the dreaded run flats. Love the adaptive suspension! So far, so smooth. Getting the hang of Mini Connected. Missing a touch screen, but learning the touch pad and figuring out how to program the presets. Voice commands work great, and the bluetooth is a snap to link to an Iphone.

The smoothness and quiet of the ride for a car of this size is impressive, even with the runflats. And acceleration/cornering, while not as zippy as a coupe, is surprisingly crisp and satisfying. I like driving this car MORE than the 2012 Jag XK I had for two years. Seriously!

After break-in, thinking it's Dinan time!

Got my Dinan installed today. My first impression is this was money well spent. The car just feels better. I haven't gotten a chance to really get on it yet but I really feel the torque in traffic in a way I didn't before. I've only driven in MID so far but I'm sure SPORT will be a blast. Shoot - maybe this will make GREEN more tolerable?

Side note: the iOS app is functional but clunky. The boost gauge isn't intuitive and the mode selection buttons look inactive even when they are usable. But, I did see boost registered when I started the app with the ignition on and engine off and then did a calibration. I also think I changed modes. You only know what mode you're in by the small psi number above the buttons.

I may have to try the android app just to see if it works any better. Just the same, it was easy to install and seems to work as advertised.

given that the main difference between green/mid/sport is adjusting throttle response, what are you looking for to make green more "tolerable". wouldnt' that be resolved by simply moving it to mid/normal?

The only thing that makes Green more tolerable is liberal use of valium.

I wondered if the increased torque at lower rpms would make the lack of throttle less sucky.
Probably wrong but it'll be easy to try that out.

If I may ask, from whom did you purchase your Dinan? Would you buy from them again?

I bought it from Dinan directly. No complaints. Might have gotten free shipping elsewhere but wanted a hassle-free return if needed.

Ordered Sunday, shipped Monday and arrived today over ups ground from CA to Chicago.

So I took another drive...
- so glad I bought this.
- Green is still unfun but the torque helps makes turning into traffic less disturbing.
- Sport is fantastic. Put a big ol' grin on my face.

Especially when you consider how easy this was to install (and will be to uninstall for service), this is a great product.

Glad you raised this issue Dragon. Does anyone have HARD DATA documenting actual HP/TQ increases directly attributable to intake mods? I have read everything on the K&N site and they are always a bit vague about specific HP/TQ gains on specific cars using their filters and tubes.

I've also wondered if having the air captured from inside the engine compartment, where temps are usually higher than outside ambient air, doesn't negate any potential gains.

One thing is known-- the sound changes when you eliminate the factory air box which, as part of its design, reduces intake noise. But is there any meaningful gain in usable power?

This is directly from K&N:

2. What increase in horsepower should I expect from a K&N replacement filter?
"K&N does not complete vehicle performance tests (dynamometer tests) for every application for which we build a replacement air filter. We do complete air flow testing for every air filter, and can verify that a K&N air filter will flow air with less restriction than its OEM counterpart. However, other components of the vehicle's air intake system (like the air filter housing or tubing) can create air restriction and limit horsepower. The design of these parts varies among different vehicles and manufacturers, so there is no way to estimate a certain amount of horsepower gain from just replacing an air filter. The higher air flow and lower restriction will increase performance, but we cannot guarantee a certain/exact amount."

And here's what K&N has to say regarding their intake system for Minis:

On the dyno a 2015 Mini Cooper 1.5 liter turbo produced an estimated additional 6.5 horsepower at 3200rpm and 11.0 pound-feet of torque at 3200rpm with K&N air intake 69-2026TTK. For a small 1.5 liter engine, those are some impressive power gains. Increases in performance for 2.0 liter turbo models will be similar, or maybe better, when 69-2026TTK is installed.

Thanks for the reply 2017All42017All4
I dont expect much of a gain from any cai due to the maf sensor.
I think there more for sound my only concern with fitting one with the dinan is if it makes the car run lean.

Unless you take it past the point that the injectors can handle I wouldn't worry about it. The ECU will learn and compensate for the changes. After you put a couple hundred miles on it you can always pull a plug and see if it's running lean. I've had four different intakes on my car and per the ScanGauge II the F/A ratio always settled down after the ECU caught up with the changes. Now granted, I have the NM module, but they do the same thing basically. YMMV

Good discussion on intakes here:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post4258414

Regarding over-lean --the engine management systems on the new BMW engines are very fast and, if functioning properly, can do a lot to correct over-lean conditions, and the engine adjusts quickly. It all depends on how much other stuff one does to "confuse" the data inputs the engine is receiving. Tricking the TMAP into giving a few more PSI of boost by using a Dinan or NM module is well within the safe zone, IMHO. Certainly according to the folks at Dinan and NM, there should be no worries.

Lots of views regarding oiled filters. I've had a pair of K&N's on my V-12 Jaguar without any intake oiling issues -- I modified the factory intake on the Jag to bring in cooler fresh air because the stock intakes sucked in super-heated underhood air. (Those older Jags run really, really hot under the hood) Helped a lot to reduce knock and improve overall performance -- but we're talking about a 1980's-era engine management system that is a dinosaur by today's standards.

When deciding on a replacement air filter, I would be VERY concerned about particulate ingestion in the new BMW engines which are built to incredible tolerances and have very complex internals that don't like dirt at all.

Just saw this Black Friday 10% rebate offer from Dinan. Maybe other vendors could match or beat plus add free shipping

You're welcome. The Art of the Deal. That's my thing. If I get 2 bucks from Dinan, I'll split it with ya.

Dinan does not have one for the Gen 2 MINI yet. Maybe in the future.
