Aftermarket Sunroof: Is it worth it?

Hi,

The only thing I feel really missing from my 2017 Justa is a sunroof.

Has anybody had one installed? Pros and Cons?

TIA.

I can't imagine the cost of retrofitting an OEM panoramic moonroof. If retrofitting the factory roof rails is over $2k then a moonroof retrofit might actually be more expensive than selling your current MINI and buying a used one with the moonroof.

Back in the 90's when sunroof isn't too common on every car, I did go through the hassle of installing sun roof on two of the cars i've owned. One being a Mitsubishi Mirage and the other on the Nissan Sentra. My experience is that after a long while (about 8-9 or so years), the weather strip get brittle, contract, and crack, letting in leaks when it rains. Changing out the weather strip did the fix for only half a year, then I've been dealing with leaks afterwards. I ended up junking those cars after total of 15 years of use on each. Not too shabby, but the leaks area big headache if it gets old and dealing with heavy rain.

A bad install is hard to recover from. Wish I could magically transport my sunroof to your car. I never open it and have vinyl covered it.

IMO, not worth it. Sunroofs all leak to some extent. The only reason why it isn’t an issue with modern OEM sunroofs is because they are engineered with internal drip trays and drains to catch and remove the rain water that does leak past the sunroof panel gaskets. Aftermarket sunroofs don’t have that (not that I’m aware of).

I've had ASC sunroofs in 2 1980's-era Jeep Cherokees and a 1997 GMC extended cab sport pick up truck. Largely trouble-free. The 1997 was much improved and behaved like a factory roof overall.

Reputable and skilled, factory-authorized professional installers seem to be the key. Not cheap.

IMO would possibly compromise structural integrity.

Not worth the risk to structural integrity. Not a 100% sure but I expect Mini engineers more structural supports in the roof when the sunroof is installed. Aftermarket is iffy.

Seriously...For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone would put one of these on their car. Even if you're trying to impress people - who is going to see it???
