Willie is Walt's sibling, or at least a relative.

AAARRRGGGHH!
I gave my MINI a wash and quick wax today. I picked up my son from school and he gets in with muddy shoes .
"I guess you'll have to clean it again." he says with a smug little look on his face.

Kids, gotta love'em. There are laws. Could be worse, he could have left the seat up.

Since it was a nice sunny Saturday today, I ended up putting ~350 miles on Shadowfax pre-running routes for the Border Skirmish Drive on April 17th.

The good news is that IA/MN-76 has been repaved all the way between Waukon and where it hits MN-44 just south of Caledonia. It's a nice surface; much more pleasant than last time, and it opens up a nice new segment of curves south of Eitzen that we bypassed last time. The scenic A-26 is still good, as is IA A-11/MN-2 (the road that can't decide what state it wants to be in). The uber-twisty west of Houston had a lot of loose sand on it but was still in good shape.

The bad news is that the nice twisty stretch of MN-43 south of Bratsberg is an absolute nightmare. The surface is so chopped up from frost heaves, gaps, and settling that I could barely get above 25 mph without feeling like my struts were going to poke thru the bonnet. No MINIs will ply this road again until it gets repaved.

So I've got my thinking cap on and will do some route rearranging. I've got some ideas and just need to find a way to weave them together while keeping the mileage reasonable. No boring roads will be allowed on this drive.

Thanks for all your hard work, Gary! I am looking forward to it.

I am also hoping to have 4 new tires by then. I have decided to skip the run flats. My plan is to get some good all seasons. I really don't drive enough in the winter to justify winter and summer tires. Any suggestions? Of course they must be up to staying on the pavement during our more 'spirited' drives And I am keeping my white rims. She just wouldn't be the same without 'em.

Miah is the tire guru, so I'd defer to his recommendation.

I know that a couple of tires receive both good ratings from the vendors and lots of kudos online from the people who purchase them, though I don't have any first-hand knowledge:
-- Bridgestone Potenza G019 Grid (High Performance All-Season)
-- Continental ContiExtreme Contact DWS (Ultra-High Performance All-Season)

The Yokohama S.drives that Brian and I have and like are strictly summer-only tires.

Tires and Oil always confuse me (I'm not a car guy) so I appreciate the reminders about what's good and good to do.

I've got the Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Season's and think they are great. They turn in better then the R/F and ride much better as well. I'm not sure if they still make them in the size you would need (205/45/17). I've talked to some people with the Bridgestone Potenza G019 Grid, and they all say they seem to feel like the side walls roll a little in hard cornering, probably because they have a softer sidewall. I don't know much about the Conti's that Gary listed, because they are really new and I never had much to do with that company (never sold them). Another good one to look into is the Goodyear Eagle GT. Tread looks really cool and they seem to corner well without much flex and they seem to get better ratings on ride then the F1 A/S do, but I don't think that the F1 A/S rides bad or makes much noise.

sorry for the rant but I guess that's what happens when you start talking tires to an ex-tire salesman. Don't even get me started on oils... ha ha

I have used Goodyears on my non-MINIs for years and have been pleased with them. I definitely appreciate the advise! There are a lot of tires out there and it gets confusing!

I have the stock Conti's on my MINI. They have served me well in all weather conditions. I'd consider getting them again for my next tire purchase.

I've got a noise/rattle type when i'm in neutral. (similar to cold start death rattle) this happens after the car is warmed up. when i push in the clutch it goes away. any ideas anyone? i'm due for servicing in 2400 miles but might take it in once it gets below 2k.
