yup!

well.. almost...

Saving the last weld till after I get it in the car and make sure everything is still lined up. Had to take it off when I started welding so things may have changed angles just slightly. and 5 degrees on a 2' arm makes a bit of difference to the positioning of the flex pipe. haha!

well I had a car filled day.

Cars and Coffee in the morning followed by another show down the street at CU ICAR (international center for automotive research)

the owner of one of 4 stateside F40 le mans editions / the only street driven one was there, I had my manifold, and even he was drooling and telling me I should go into buisness

(he works on his himself)

anywho. It drew a lot of attention, and one of my friends even tagged me in a random photo upload and recognized my manifold ( he was not even at cars and coffee today)

anywho.

On the way home I picked up a benchtop buffer and decided to polish some stuff. Nice day. Sunny. Didnt feel like cutting pipe and doing more welding, so I spent a day on some detail stuff.

A futile effort.. but eh. what the hell.

?

Not sure which way to take that. haha

Kid looks creepy as **** though.

In other news,

Intake manifold design has been taking a while. Going back to the drawing board a bit and will be attempting to find a way to fit a SC bypass in so that it opens once the turbo spools up (turbo will bypass the SC)...

So in the mean time I am toying with the idea of taking the SC completely off and swapping water pumps, lines, and tensioner over to the R50 version, and running the car T-only for now.

thoughts?

I could have it done much sooner, and actually get to enjoy this spring with her.

Honestly it will probably work better with just the turbo. Youve got the ViPEC, so you wont have any problems running it that way either.

Take the sc out and just run a turbo alone. That's what I would do and will do as soon as my sc dies.

just bought the R50 water pump, tensioner, belt, and a bunch of other crap last night.

Here is to hoping I didn't forget anything!

With stage 1 hopefully. Currently redesigning the intercooler in the first few pages into a smaller, more compact, and lighter package. Original design being solid billet had a lot of extra material and was quite heavy. New will be machined and welded, but overall a better design.

Still need to do clutch, lsd, etc. And have to make an exhaust. Started shopping for those components last night.

I don't ever want this build thread to end. I'm way too entertained.

Yeah making your own custom exhaust should be easy at this point.

been playing with clearances and design some today between checking on my development run (I do have a day job after all )

Trying to make this as tight of a package as possible, as the orriginal design just was not cutting it. The end-tanks made it just a little too long, and having water ports on both sides was also killing me.

Current profile looks like it may fit in a 10"x2.5" box looking down the side, but long ways (water port to water port) may be in the 10-11 range..

"Good bit" smaller than the first design.

Already done more work than what is shown here, but keeping some of it under wraps until I get everything sorted out.

I'll have to measure when I get home, but does anyone know if this would fit where the original top mount went? (just curious) (I dont think so though...)

oh, what the hell.

here it is mirrored with the bottom side.

Essentially the top and bottom halves are the exact same.

A bit. Its pretty amazing and can do whatever you want it too.

plus the 4d, 5d and 6d fuel + timing tables allow you to do some nifty stuff with boost control and fuel type.

Been following the build thread, you are doing some amazing work. Some inspiration for sure.

I say get the thing on the road with the turbo, then take your time to get the SC dialed in.

Does anyone have dimensions on a GRS top mount intercooler?

Trying to think of the largest top mount anyone has ever attempted to use without actually attempting to measure the space under the hood.

but if this IC is smaller than the biggest one used I will at least know it fits

im just curious...why dont you do a front mount ? piping will be a little long from compressor side to the end tank but shorter from the throttlebody to the other end tank.

There are actually several reasons for that.

firstly, a lot of it has to do with this being a pull through vs a blow through setup.

since the throttle is before the turbo, when the throttle shuts, the engine must consume all of the air in the intake path before a change in engine input is really noticed.

It does not take long, but if you have too much volume it will caused the process to respond too slow for the throttle controller PID and it will cause the car to oscillate at stabilizing conditions like idle. (or fail to run period if the cycles are too large)

Running piping to the front bumper and back with a large intercooler core is pretty much a no-no.

This applies for any setup, but it is why ITB cars are known for having great throttle response (very very little lag time for pressure changes on throttle open or close) and is also why the stock mini S intake path is so compact and short.

Honestly, I am not sure how the front mount kits for the stock SC get away with it sometimes.

ALSO!
~ I am still running A/C. There is not a whole lot of room in that front bumper for access without taking A/C out.

The largest radiator I could fit was 1.5" thick and 6" tall as well as being fairly narrow (you can see it on one of the first few pages IIRC)

I had to modify the end tanks AND the bumper itself to even get that to fit

Next step may be to get a Bell Radiator core and make one from scratch that fits up a little better, but going to try my modified garret one first.

something else you dont see on here every day.

Prototyped end plates finished. (sent these outside)

working on designing the water feed and return blocks now. They will be two piece and much thinner than the original design.
