Adding / Retrofit sport button R56

Hi everybody!
I own a mcs my2011 without the magic "sport button" (not default option in Italy).

I just need to know how to install it and let it work...mini dealer say it is not possible but I am pretty sure it can be done...

just buy the button, connect to the right wire and activate the option on the ecu :-)

Is there a way to DIY with a programmer ? or anybody can help me out ? I really need to know...
any help will be appreciate!

p.s. I live in Italy

Ciao Rolant!

If you have a manual transmission, you may just want to go with a sprint booster type device. That's all the sport button will do for you anyhow. It only improves that and the automatic transmission shift points - hence, if no auto transmission, no need for it.

It also changes the steering, and modifys the ECU map somewhat, doesn't it?

I don't know if it's just a button and turning something on in the ECU map or not, but it does make sense that the feature is already in the ECU. Strange that they don't offer it in certain countries....

That said, like peeti said, I don't know if it's worth the trouble and expense.

Congrats on your new car tho!

thank you very much for your reply.

My car is a six-manual.

I am going to buy the switch/button then I will figure out how to enable it on the ecu (this is the main question...how? mini dealer can't help me).

I heard about ecu programmer that can be used to increase power but also to activate/deactivate ecu options, is it true ?

This is the programmer for activating factory options:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...2534-tool.html

The sport button is standard in North America, so nobody here has experience retrofitting it. Have you asked about it in the European forums like MINI2, TotalMINI, or the Dutch or German forums?

I wonder if you even need it. My car's gas pedal feels slow and unresponsive when sport is off but more like a normal car with sport on. The rental bmw 318 6speed I had in germany had no sport button but the pedal felt like my mini does with sport on.

Makes me wonder if 'sport' is actually the normal setting and 'sport off' is a sluggish setting that isn't available everywhere.

You can retrofit it. You can retrofit anything into the MINI. It is just a question of do you want to spend the money.

Hi Rolant,

when you buy the switch, does it come with the wire harness?

i just checked with local mini, the switch doesn't come with the cable harness, therefore, need to get an extra cable from the switch to the X14272, unless anyone knows the part number for that cable harness...

please advise....

I also bought the switch console with the sport button. I haven't had time so far to install it, but maybe someone can answer the question whether the harness already has the wires for it or whether an alternative harness is needed (and if so, maybe you have a part number). Coding the ECU then is not that hard, once one knows that the switch is connected.

i used the method by Chernobyl, the link above.

There is no wire(prewired there), that's why I have have this concern because i want to have the button installed....but I don't want to wire an extra wire, i want to use the orginal harness.....

vbmenu_register("postmenu_3263705", true);

Hm, I don't know whether someone already disassembled the center console to find out whether the connector also has the one or two extra pins for the sport button. To quote Chernobyl:

Option 1: this is more expensive and much more work. You'll need to pull the centre console, remove the existing switch block and the replace it with the new module. You'll also need to run some extra wires from the switch module back to the JBE (fuse box - also known as the SPEG) since if you don't have the button your wiring harness probably doesn't have the wires either. As you can see, this option will give you the factory look, but at a lot of effort and expense.
Can anyone confirm whether the two wires or so are there or not? Sorry for my ignorance, but I simply can't imagine that BMW would try to save a few pence for six feet of thin copper as the administrative overhead for specific harnesses are probably not wort it.

Here is the answer! You do not need the access port but a USB cable and OBD NCSExpert

I want to resurrect this thread and have a few questions regarding wiring for the sport button. To those people who added a new wire what gauge did you use? Also what is the best route for the wires without pulling too much interior paneling? If you have pictures please post a link.
