I've got 225/50/R16's stuffed under there right now for my track tires (Got a great deal). They're probably closer to 235's in actual width (They're REALLY wide). It really depends on wheel offset, ride height, and camber.
With my ET37 Ultraleggera track wheels, going wide is difficult. With something a bit less extreme like my ET43 (I think) offset Kosei K1 street wheels, you can stuff some wide rubber under there before I get rubbing.
