Well after months of delays the garage is almost done. Ceiling was painted, new walls built and I just power washed the floor. The floor gets painted on Sunday. Pictures soon after

here is a old picture done months ago before we started our sun room project.

And this sounds ridiculous, but as much as I want it to look nice, I'd rather spend less money on it...more money for mods that way I think I can probably make it look really nice with an epoxy floor and some strategically installed IKEA cabinetry.
I hear ya ... After I started pricing out the Ultimate cabinets ... dropped it immediately. While they are not overly expensive I just didn't see it to spend that much money on it.

Like I said, I wanna go with the countertop as work surface, got the legs still around, have some nice LACK shelves from IKEA that won't work in the house anymore and 4 file cabinets from the swedes as well which won't fit by color but that can be changed

I love the LACK shelves; I'd been eyeing them for a project in the living room but we found something else that worked better...I always wondered if it'd be sturdy enough to use as a "workbench"...granted, I don't (and wouldn't) put a lot of weight or anything on a workbench...the only time I do now is to climb up and grab something I can't reach, but if I redid it all I wouldn't have that problem anyway! But I love how the LACK shelves appear to have no hardware. Nice and clean looking!

I need to just take some measurements and go into IKEA with a floor plan and have them help me. They have so many different kinds and some don't work together and some do and there's no way to know until it's all too late.

Nice kenchan !
Are you happy with your workbench ?
I considered it but the ones I liked come in 72" width and my garage is 2 inches short to fit 2... or it would leave to much space
I will go with a 8' kitchen countertop, afixed to the back studs of my garage with study brackets and using chrome legs from IKEA for the front. Got them left from my old office desks and thank the lord in that case, I didn't throw them away
yah, my bench is pretty small but it serves me well. im thinking of
getting a maple top down the road when the treated particle
board gets worn. i also like the Griot's mobile cart with the foam
top. between that and the workbench, i can pretty much get my
job done.

that's a great idea to make that 8' kitchen counter top your work bench.
those things are thick and very sturdy.

Nope, the shelves won't do it as a workbench, the mounts might hold a little more but the shelf itself would give.
I will only use them to display my modelcar collection or for my little Miss Budweiser
When that time comes I will look around for some nice plexiglass boxes to save me some work on dusting.

Yeah, I'm totally hooked on these countertops. In my old apartment I had three mounted in U shape along the wall in the office. That was the best deskspace ever !

yah, and the best part is that you can cut stuff precisely on it
without needing like a plexiglass or some cutting board to make those
stripes or watever you're working on.

Unfortunately, I found a flaw in my idea :(
The legs I wanted to use are average table height which seems a little short to use it as a workbench for more than 2 minutes and not getting backpain...

Back to the drawing board...

volker- dang... but you're right, workbench should be on the taller
side. i even place my bench on the 4"+ ledge part of the garage floor to
get extra height.

I wanna pump the height of the surface up to 40" at least.
My Kitchen counters have currently 37" and that is still to low for me (at 5'10") .
Guess I will go with heavy duty brackets (at least 16" deep) for the backside, afixed to the struds and if that doesn't hold it alone I will put 2 4x8 under the front as legs.
Still need to make the way to HD or Lowes to see if they have something else that might work.

May have to make your own legs using 2x4 or threaded pipe. Steel angle iron would work as well.

Ok here are some pictures of the garage project. I started this in the winter but just recently finished it. I painted all walls and ceilings, added two walls and put in a mud room. Next year I will add a new floor but this will be it for now.

It looks pretty good for a 35 year old house I have to wait until Friday before I can park the mini back in it but it is worth it (Thank god I have another garage out back ). I also installed my M7 Strut Bar today it is sweet

More pictures can be found here ---> http://tshared.com/images/GarageProject/
Sorry these are from my Blackberry so not the best.

Here are a couple of the new sunroom (This is what delayed the Garage remodel)

Oh, there is something else I would appreciate input on:

The new toolbox I showed a few posts ago needs stocking.
I was looking at some of the Sears Craftman packages but I'm a little clueless what I should get as a basic/advanced toolset for automobile/general workshop needs ? I might wanna spend up to maybe $400 on it. This will not include powertools (got already things like electric drill, saw and PC) or things like compressor or shopvac.

Any advice ?

the mechanic packages sears has is pretty decent... you'll want to have
1/2, 3/8, and 1/4 drive sockets and ratchets. combination wrenches,
offset wrenches, stubby wrenches, and that sort of things. breaker
bar in 1/2 and 3/8 is a great thing to have. also check out griots for
their Facom wrenches (it's good stuff), and DP for Beta.

you'll know which tools you'll need to buy once you start doing different
projects so dont need to feel like you need to buy it all at once...cause
you'll end up going to the store MANY MANY times anyway. believe me.

Thanks kenchan ! Excellent advice !
And don't fear, I do believe you ... Went there yesterday again, bought small stuff I didn't know I would need
And I finally bought Mechanix gloves, have eyed them for years. I really needed them, always felt so ackward checking my oil with out them... I swear, Sears is dusting their tools and toolboxes with something that makes you buy stuff

It's true though...we have a plethora of tools and there's always SOMETHING!

In the end, for every project you're going to need something random. I've just started keeping my own smaller tool set - for a MINI project, I check to see if I have it, and if not, it goes on the list for the OSH trip (after today, I am never going to Home Depot again!).

So far, all I have are some screwdrivers, a set of Torx keys, and a ratchet with 5 or 6 metric sockets. It really doesn't take much with a MINI.
