Nail in my run flat tires, should I replace?
Well, took my MINI into MINI San Francisco after the Tire indicator started flashing, they said its got a nail in it. After reading the FAQ's, I can't decide if I should patch it (which tire reps I've spoken to so far said they won't do) or have the runflat tire (195/55R-16) replaced for mucho $.

Any ideas? Thanks!
Carter

Patch it. I've had mine patched for 3000 miles with no issues. You just need to find a tire shop that will do it. BMW did mine.

If you can find someone to patch it then go ahead and have that done. If you still feel uncomfortable after patching it you can throw on another tire. Atleast that will buy you some time to swallow that bill for the new tire.

I know when they told me I had to replace mine and how much it was my mouth dropped.

Good luck with it.

it really depends on how long the tire as driven at low air pressure. if the tire has been run "flat" for a period of time it builds up more heat, and can begin to weaken. If run flat, replace it. if not a good rubber patch can do.

It all depends on how close the puncture is to the sidewall...too close and the patch and glue can work loose in hard cornering.

Same problem with nail here...purchased a replacement through Tire Rack, received it within 24 hours, regular ground shipment, and found a place to mount it. I'm in the market for an extra wheel to have the nailed tire plugged, patched and mounted for a spare.

It's very much dependent on where the puncture is. If it's not in the sidewall, patch it as a temporary measure, then buy a used run-flat from someone getting rid of theirs. No need to buy new when there are dozens of MINI owners with identical tires that have replaced them with aftermarket units. I would think you could almost get a set of 4 for the price of one new one.

It might also be a good excuse to convince your significant other that it would be a good time to get those Kumho autox tires you always wanted!

Thanks to everybody for the helpful responses.

Turns out I had 2 nails!

Anyway, the Goodyear shop patched me up, so I'm all set. However, being an idiot I hadn't had my tires rotated in 17k (I assumed the dealer did so at 10k tune-u), so my 2 fronts need replacing for @ $180/each. Oh well, the price you pay for driving like a wanna be #3 car!
