I've got the MINI donut spare. It fits in the boot. I wedge the bottom as far to the rear as I can and then lean the top forward against the seat back. In this position the boot cover closes completely and everything is out of sight. I will say that I'm not at all sure this is the safest route. Will the seats stay locked in a collision? I don't know. I asked that question in another thread but never got an answer.

I don't have a picture but could get one if needed. During the winter I run non-runflat snow tires and carry a small 12VDC air compressor and a bottle of "Slime" as my spare tire repair kit.

I also carry a tire plugging tool, actually a more positive fix if you can find the leak, and it does not alter the balance of the tire or gross out the tire changing guy when the tire finally has to be removed from the rim.

stick behind passenger seat

I don't have the pic, but works well for me in bag lady bag placed behind passenger seat with seat put back to make it tight and non-moveable..

Did anyone see the fifth gear program where they showed the effects of objects in car in a 30 mpg crash? That spare better be bolted to the floor pan or, its going to go right thru your head and out the windshield. Makes you think twice when you but a few extra tools into the boot.

I agree 100% - been there, done that. The bracket I made (above) is VERY sturdy.

Rick: I agree your bracket looks very sturdy. Much safer than just laying it in the boot

Her is mine:smile:

Ok, my air compressor is actually smaller than that, but thats the best pic I could find. Used it all this weekend, got a nail in the tire . It all fits in the left boot pocket. Dont loose any space

I have 5! And I keep them in the garage.

For everyday use, I carry Tire Slime and a portable compressor with a mobile phone for backup. For longer trips, I carry a compact spare in a black Bag Lady bag. The "like-new" runflats and S-Lites are for use only while I wait for a replacement tire(s).

13,500 miles and still motoring without a net!

It fits over the top of the spare perfectly but it can't flip up with the hatch - I just undo the ropes.

For those with the plugs, air compressor and slime - I got one flat - the valve stem broke off.

that's a nice setup rick...are you planning on selling your brackets? i've been searching for a way to store a spare without having it stuffed behind the passenger seat (don't want to ruin the leather) or having it rattle in the trunk.

Me too. It looks like the way to go. I did not consider what might happen in a frontal collision at 30 mph. What a thought! Guess that spare MUST be securely fastened. I wonder what golf clubs would do--but they don't fit in a MINI's trunk anyway, unless maybe they are for MINIature golf?

I don't have a picture, but I keep my spare tucked in behind my driver's seat. It fits in there perfectly and NEVER moves around, even on sprirted drives. I never have passengers so it's not an issue and if I did, I'd just move it to the boot.

The first thing I asked before I bought my Mini was whether my golf clubs would fit. And sure enough, I keep my clubs AND my cart in there all summer (seats folded down, of course) and still have room on top of that for 40 - 50 bags of groceries (should I ever need to buy that many).

I like the idea of carrying a spare, especially for long trips. What I don't like is the idea of that spare taking my or my passengers head off in a bad wreck. A while back on the Brit TV show Fifth Gear they did a segment on what happens to unsecured objects in a frontal collision. It was a real eye opener for me. The tool box that was laying in the boot of the test sedan came right through the rear seats into the front of the car. I'd bet it weighed less than a spare too. I think some strong nylon tie down straps would be a good idea if one plans to carry a spare in the back of a MCS.
