TPMS reset on 2020 how long should it take?
TPMS reset on 2020 how long should it take?
Hey, I recently had the winter tires and TPMS sensors from my 2012 Countryman moved over to some new rims on my 2020 F54 Clubman All4 S. I reset the TPMS using the on board computer, but I can’t get the reset to complete. It made to 49% on the way to work. I tried again and can’t get it past 0%. Does anyone know how long and how fast you need to drive to get the TPMS to reset. The sensors worked fine in my 2012 R60. I have a short commute of 6 miles and don’t go above 50 Mph for very long. Tire pressure is spot on the suggested of 35 psi. Any other way to reset? Any insight here would be appreciated!
Two thoughts:
1 How old are the sensors? The batteries in them start to fail at about 6-10 years.
2 Are you sure the 2012 Countryman and the 2020 F54 use the same type and frequency sensor?
MINI did change them a few times over the years and my 2009 Clubman was very picky about having the right sensor and programming to work.

On our 2011, 2014 or 2016 a reset always happened with 2 miles at maximum. All are the same frequency TMPS sensors. Sensors didn't change as far as I know. Seems like if they did it wouldn't connect at all.
A 2020 is obviously under warranty so why not head over to the dealer? I am assuming you reused OEM sensors.
I have reset mine recently using my OBD scan tool, but not sure you'd want to spend $200 or so just for that purpose.

The sensors are 6 years old, purchased in 2013. They were working fine last winter on my R60. I guess it is possible that they are bad. It looks like both cars use a 433 MHz sensor. The sensor reset did make it to 49 % complete once. I am curious how long the reset process should take, because my commute is very short. I need to know if I need to make a longer trip at higher speed to allow the reset to complete.
Once in a while if I start the reset process and stop too soon after starting it seems to take forever for the reset to resume.
And even when not resetting the system, I observe when driving it can take a while for the pressures to update.
You can try a longer route to work or for an experiment on say a weekend start a reset and point the car down the road, a highway preferably, then just see how long it takes for the reset to happen.
While 6 years is not that much time and some owners report better than 6 years of sensor life not everyone is going to experience the same.
I had to have the two front tires replaced a while back. Worn out. (I discovered sport mode...) The car is just two years old come this Dec.27 so I didn't feel the need to have the TMPS sensors replaced.
But I'll probably replace these before they get to 6 years old when I have new tires fitted.

Yep, bad battery or bad unit itself. Like above mine takes like a couple hundred feet and its happy.

Just an update on my situation and a word of caution for anyone purchasing aftermarket wheels for a 2020...My old sensors will not work. My shop says that only MINI genuine sensors can be purchased at over 100 bucks each. I’m just going to sit tight for now dismissing the TPMS warning every time I start the car, and wait for less expensive options. I contacted Tire Rack yesterday and they didn’t have any information on the 2020 sensors yet.

I got mine from Tire Rack.
vehicle specific and ready to
go without any programming
needed. I think they were about
$35 each. Tire rack is good at
getting the application right for
the make model and year when
you supply that info. ECS is, too.
Ones supplied by my local tire
shop didn’t work. They did give
me a refund on the cost of the
sensors and programming after
I had them swapped out for the
Huf brand ones from TR.

Here’s what Tire Rack told me about my 2020:
Unfortunately, at this time we have not had the opportunity to gather all of the fitment data on the new model year Mini's. We will be gathering this as soon as possible and when we do we will be able to assist with your vehicles sensors.

That sucks.
They were able to put the right ones
on a winter wheel and tire set for a
newly bought 2020 BMW M240i
convertible but I guess they’re not
quite ready for the 2020 MINIs.
and ECS tuning only lets you check
for up to a 2019 clubman S All4.

Maybe get a set from the dealer,
and if they want an arm and a leg
for them, at least get the MINI
part number and you can check
that against earlier years covered
in realoem.com as they currently
go up to 3/19 (sensor part #
3610688189).
I’ll bet the 2020 is the same as
the 2019, but best to check first.

The OP meant RESET.
Mine show pressure readings before the end of the block too.
BUT
A RESET takes at least 2 miles, and above 25 mph.
Sorry, I thought you were talking about problems with the R60 sensors. Gen 2 MINIs
I know they changed the sensors from the Gen 2 MINI to the Gen 3 MINIs, and they will not work across generations.
The F54-F60 Gen 3 MINI sensors are here, they share the same system by generations. Huf and VDO options. Fits 2020 also.

A few months ago, I got new wheels and put new (aftermarket) sensors in them, for my F56.
I drove about a mile before I got an Error Msg. With that, I did a Reset.
I drove about another mile, in city traffic (some lights were red, some lights were green, never got more than 30mph), before the it made it to 100%.

I just ordered Tirerack sensors they say work for a 2019 and they work fine on my new 2020.
Minimania sell the oem sensors and they are the same for the whole 3rd generation models.https://new.minimania.com/part/G3NMW...55-F56-F57-F54
