help me pick tires

ok, just got some kosei K1 racing wheels and i need new rubber for them. there 17x7.5 and i dont want to go any fatter then 40 or 45 on the sidewalls. tires will be used for a little auto X but mostly "spiritd" driving. i have a set of winter wheels and a set of nasty weather wheels so weather is not an issue. looking to keep this low budget if possible. thanks

I run a couple of sets of wheels; 17 x 7 and 18 x 7.5. On both sets, I use General Exclaim UHP tires. The 17s are 215/45/17 and the 18s are 215/35/18. I am well pleased with the ride and performance of the General tires. They may not be the "best" tires for auto-x or extreme spirited driving, but for normal use they are hard to beat.

Go to Tire Rack and read the reviews. They are rated #1 in their class; out of 47 tires, and the price is hard to beat.

You can order them thru Tire Rack, Discount Tire, as well as several other tire dealers. Prices will and do vary greatly, so shop around.

Go to Tire Rack and they can help you narrow your choice down, i just got Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R's and love them They are classified as Extreme Performance Summer.

I feel that the General Exclaim tires would be a great choice. Tirerack.com will have them, and they are rated highly among all sorts of automotive enthusiasts!

If you look at the link to the tire rack chart, the tire I run is listed as #2. The Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 gets VERY high marks for cornering stability and resistance to hydroplaning as well.

You may notice the tread wear is only rated 7.8 but so far I have over 35K miles on my set (rotated only once) and STILL have another 15-20K left since I'm not even close to the treadwear indicators. I love pushing mine on the off ramps and they are rock solid. A little rougher than some others on really bumpy roads but nothing that bad for sure. The performance aspect is well worth it.

After riding shotgun with me in the hills, my wife is considering a rally type harness for her peace of mind :-)

the General Exclaim tires look like my best bet due to price. only concern is if they will be stable enough for the occasional auto-x or not.

Nope. If you check the tire specs on each site it lists the recommended rim range for that tire width. I've run 225 width tires on my 16x7.5's.

perfect. OEM Subaru puts a 215/45 on 17x7.

I'm running 215/45 ZIEX912 on 17x7.5 for winter and the same in RE01R for summer
