Ficcion^^....have you looked up under your car to see how much inside clearance you have in the rear? I'm looking at a new set of wheels with slightly more backspacing than the wheels you have now and i would love to hear if your wheels are close to rubbing on the struts(and other parts) or not. How much room do you have on the inside? Thanks

Has the rear suspension remained unchanged in the R56 models?

Nice to see this thread is proving useful for some people.

In terms of clearance it should be the same.

I'm getting an r56 though

An S this time around? Keeping the Cooper? Now I'm interested in seeing what you come up with for the R56.

Still sticking with a Cooper....no need for the performance of the MCS and the bigger brakes mean my current wheels wont fit

I'm trying to see if 9.5's will fit and not rub the struts....i found a sweet set of wheels, but I'm worried that 9.5 is just too wide to run. I wish they were 8.5 or 9's instead.:impatient

Ah I see, I just find the Cooper's too too slow lolol.

With the offsets that you like to run I wouldn't doubt that a set of 17x9.5 will fit back there. On the R53 d6-mcs ran the 17x8's with about an inch of clearance at an ET25. Provided the same offset, that would leave you with about 1/4" clearance wouldn't it? Provided the suspension setups are nearly identical, or very similar obviously.

From test fitting my wheels on a R56, there is less clearance to the aluminum trailing arms than there was on the old R53 steel trailing arms. As always, YMMV....

With stock suspension there is about a "pinky" finger width in the rear (from strut and suspension arm) and front (from strut). I would say there is roughly 5-7mm to work with on the inside still.

Remember this is a 235/40/17 Bridgestone RE-01R. Other tires will be different (wider or narrower) even though the same size is printed on the sidewall.

With a set of H&R springs I get slight rubbing on the outside plastic of the wheel well under hard cornering, but nothing that matters much.

I have racked my brain thinking of a legitimate way to get a 17x9 on there but that is an extra 12.7 mm per side! With the correct offset you could do it but the tire would stick out and hit the fender plastic on compression I think? Who knows, the stock suspension is so frickin high anyway maybe it wouldn't compress down that far to begin with...?

How much room is there between the suspension parts and the actual wheel itself? My tires won't be an issue as I'll probably run slightly stretched tires again.

what's teh best offset for a 17x8? tires will be wide....coilovers too. A wheel manufacturer I've spoken with said "17x8 doesn't work on the R53 - we couldn't get it to fit".

what about it didnt fit? rub on the inside or the outside?

low 40's down to high 30's will be your best bet if you wanna run fatty tires. Might need a tiny bit of camber...but you want that up front anyways.

What about a 18x8 with a 45 offset mounted on a R56 lowered with H&R springs?

What is the advantage other than look with 8" wide wheels? Do you get any better handling with more tire on the road. I am looking at going with Tomason TN1 17x8 wheels and was looking for advantages of going with 8" wide wheels

Truth....women love 9" wheels

All joking aside, yes theoretically 8's allow you to run wider tires which will offer more traction if that's the route you can go. The only issue is that with some offsets, your tire size options are still determined by rubbing conflicts so you might not be able to use the 8's to their full advantage if their offset is too low.

Yep 4x100. I personally haven't seen or heard of any conversions to 5x120. People have, however, run adapters successfully.

I'm looking at new wheels in the near future... What would the best offset for 17x8's on a r53 be? I'm looking at team dynamics 1.2, either a 37 or 45mm offset?
