Help with loose hose in engine (see photo)

I noticed a loose hose in the engine of my '08 MCS and can't figure out where it connects to! bought the car recently and apparently that hose was loose when I got the car. The car runs fine!

Please help me identify that hose and it's function and where it connects to. Thanks.

I just went and looked at my 07 MCS and same thing.
Didn't crawl under to see where bottom goes but top
is just there. Could just be s breather hose for something.
I don't see anything that it would fit on.

The tube is kinda of stiff also, not very flexible.
My car runs fine. Maybe it's something that was to hook
to some option we possibly don't have???

If we don't get an answer, I'm taking my car in next Wed.
for some aftermarket upgrades and I'll ask the mechanic.

Thanks drsimmons! that was my initial thoughts that it could be a 'breather hose'. But when I looked closely at the open end, it seems that something may have been connected to it at one time!?

Keep us posted when you find out what that hose's function is. Thanks

^^^You are also correct. Mine looked as though there was a plastic tie
attached to it at some point. Weird.
I'm sure someone will chime in and give us an answer.

A while back I found a weird looking screw with a spring attached to it that felt loose and got a couple of responses and finally one that made sense and did id it.

It helps to ocasionally looked around the engine bay for anything out of
the ordinary.

Just an update. Went to dealership yesterday for a club gathering. Mechanics were not there but I did ask a couple of guys that seem to know their way around Mini's what the hose is.
All said it's a transmission breather hose.
I'm bringing mine in Tuesday evening (drop off for work) and I'll verify with the mechanic.
Is your car an auto????? or Manual???????

Oops. just saw your sig., yours is an automatic also so I'm thinking it is a trans breather hose. They said it probably has a little valve of sort in the end (loose end). I'll still verify
Tuesday.

I have a post here somewhere asking the same question and showing the same pic. It is a vent tube, I asked my SA about it and she confirmed it.

Cool, figured that's what it was. Actually, I'm surprised I didn't stumble
across your orig. post since it took me forever to re-find this one. LOL.

Thanks drsimmons & benibiker for the update. I am still curious as to what engine component it is 'venting'.

If it's a transmission breather hose, then no engine component is "breathing" through it. The transmission is; this allows mostly for things (gears, sliders, oil, air) to expand when they warm up and to contract when they cool down.

The engine will breathe through the PCV system, into the intake. Fuel vapor from the tank will also wind up in the intake. This is for emissions reasons, to keep oil and fuel vapor from coming out and contributing to air pollution.

I was informed it vents the auto trans.
I'll confirm tomorrow when I drop my car off.
Aaron, the mech. that works on my car knows
his stuff.

Ok, just got home and Aaron did confirm that the tube is the transmission
breather hose.
Nothing to worry about.

Thanks drsimmons for the clarification about the breather hose. It puts my mind at ease knowing everything is in order in the engine!
