Fuel Filler Cover Pot Flew Off Today!

I was at the Mini dealer this morning to complete the WP recall when on the way home at my favorite ethanol free gas station I noticed the Cover pot was gone! (Note it was there 30 min prior when I had to put in 1 gal before I headed up the mountain.) How does this cover attach? I just put in a note to an aquaintence for the price on replacement oem #51172754659 with Chili red paint.

Does it glue on?

I'm assuming you mean the plastic chrome fuel door cover.
There is a little clip on the inside lip (at the top) that holds the cover on.
If for some reason the clip dislodged and the outer cover rotated
that's what happened. To get the cover off you lift the little clip
and turn the cover and it comes off. Replacing it you just slip it on and
rotate it.

I don't believe you can get the pot pre-painted. It's about $17 from Penske in primer. It just snaps on and is held in place by 2 fragile looking clips (attached to the pot) in the 2 and 4 o'clock position. I converted my Justa to the S style fuel filler and my local body shop charged me $25 to paint the pot. There's no provision to glue it on but I suppose you could use some clear silicone to hold it in place .

Dave, you mention 2 clips. The OP has an 07, same as mine and it's only
got 1 little clip and the cover goes on and you turn it to lock it into place.

Maybe the 2010's are a little different.

I was wondering that too!

It's here: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...68&hg=41&fg=25
Part #51172754659 mentioned in the original post is item 8, "insert, cover pot, primered". Item 7 is the actual "cover pot".

Oh so it attaches with clips. I'll have to inspect it further (the new one) when it arrives.

Thanks,

Travis

Well, was I forever wrong. Only thought you meant the cap itself
because I almost lost mine one day. I opened my gas cap and the
cover came off. That's why I thought you meant the cap itself.
Didn't realize the pot part could also fly off. WOW.
