air bag light

Today had intermittent air bag warning light. I would like to resolve this without trip to dealer if possible. Has anyone experienced this with their Mini 2004 S?

Oh yes...big problem on some of the first generations Mini's. Is it the passenger? There is a new recall out to cover the passenger seat sensor airbag issue.

2004 is probably too early to have a passenger occupancy mat. I believe they started in 2005.

I would get the codes read - it will point you to which specific airbag is giving the fault.

Did you have anything sitting on the passenger seat?

Objects sitting on the passenger seat won't matter for an early R53 with no passenger occupancy sensor mat

As suggested, pull the codes and see what they read. It'll definitely give you a better idea of what is going on. Here is a thread on NAM about intermittent air bag lights with some solutions. See if it may be a little helpful.

+1 yes, 1/2005+ have the mat.

Have you checked the battery , load test the battery first. Have you had the steering wheel replaced or messed with anything on the dash before ?

had any luck

I recently purchased a 02 r53 and airbag light was a weekly issue so I purchased a scanner on ebay for $40 all codes for passenger side. turns out a small change in voltage will turn on code. The problem was almost every time I popped the passenger seat to get in the back it would apply presure to the 3 connectors on the seat. So cleared codes 2 pull ties to take tension off connectors and 0 problems since. Hope this helps.

I do upholstery and run into this a lot with newer generation vehicles in general. The new Gen seat bags are weight programmed to accommodate appropriate air pressure for different sized kids and adults. According to a local import service mechanic I do business with you have to calibrate each weight level when you trip these sensors to ensure proper use. As long as the car is off and not turned on while seat is out you are okay. I disconnect the battery and wait 10 min, religeously, to be sure. Nothing kills a 200 dollar job like having to fork over 50 percent to my mech for tripping an airbag. He paid 40,000 for a specialized professional diagnostic tool that he uses so i don even try to intrude on our relation ship over that Just some fyi, next time you get quoted outrageous prices for repairs or recovers understand all the things a shop has to go through in order to work on modern cars, then call the dealer and ask for oem cover prices, then return to the upholsterer with a 25% tip on top of his quote and still walk away with hundreds worth of savings in your pocket.

Delete or move if needed. Was posting from my phone and I obviously don't know how to post in the correct thread. Was going for What have I done to my mini today thread.

Mounted some BC coilovers with swift spings. Now I got a gokart! It has minimal body roll. It has not adjusted yet, setting are factory defalts. l’m letting the springs settle before final adjustments and alignment, but the difference is night and day... and I still have the stock swaybar on the car.

Really fun car to drive.

Blacked out fender flares

I have slowly been replacing chrome (door handles) and other colored bits with "smoked" or black versions. Just replaced the orange and red fender signals with smoked reolacements from WayMotor Works. The new ones fit perfect, were relatively easy to put in (a few curse words, but nothing too dramatic) and look great. I did order brighter LEDs than came with the kits originally and am very happy.

Not sure if I'll replace all the chrome and non primary colored pieces (car is Green and Black) but I am getting closer to the look I want.
