Just got back my 08 (Jan08 build) MCS for the cold start issue. 25,500 miles.
They replaced the Timing Chain and tensioner as well as 7 other parts for this issue. On start up - no noise.

Because of P0302 code, they also replaced two injectors. And while they were at it they also found a leaking thermostat which was also replaced.

Back to being a happy camper again.

March 09 build MCS
Had vacuum pump replaced only to have problem come back next morning.

Dealer then replaced tensioner and timing chain (1/28/10 13500). Will report back if problem returns.

It's first time so far and the noise not that loud. I just start drive gently and a minute later the noise gone.

2010 MCS (December 2009 assembly date)

300 miles (1 week old)

Metal on metal rattle from the left side of the engine, yesterday, twice after cold starting at 3 Fahrenheit (-16 Celsius), lasted about 2-5 minutes, sounded like a diesel engine

What should I ask the dealer to change or check on such a new car? Any advice please, as I don't want to drive 150 miles to the dealership for naught?

PS The car has been towed to the dealer for replacing the intake manifold with the redesigned 4 port one, after having presented the icy throttle starting problem later during the day...

Guys Im sorry but with the merge of my thread with this one by the mods my count got trashed. I started a petition on the mini cooper archive site below as well as if you want to register in the comments section we can keep a more accurate count. It appears that this issue is getting serious enough where we should be trying to do something about it.

I changed my oil to 0w-30 and the rattle has been nonexistent for me. Literally went from every other day to nil. Its been two months and about two thousand miles since i last had the noise. Success in my book.

before this, castrol 5w-30, before that the original oil. Yall should try it out and report back!! Its not that cold here though. It never gets below freezing where i currently live. So this may not help you all out who live in the frigid temps!!

Sigh

July '07 build. MCS auto. Had the rattle a couple of times.

Took it to Momentum Mini here in Houston and got the usual run-around. Ranges from essentially "they all do that when it is cold" to "bring it back if it gets worse" (and in the same conversation). Even had the service rep tell me that the weather is getting warmer so it should stop.

Problem (finally) solved at 19845 miles

Jan 08 build. MCS auto. Rattle almost everyday (<40F) or even park at slope (<50F), rattle noise range from annoying to scary.

First my dealer replace time chain tensioner @ 8600 miles, oil level checked. Problem was still there but the rattle period was shorten somehow from (10+ mins to <5mins). After warming up, the engine still runs rough at winter at low rev compare to summer.

Finally at they fixed the problem by replacing the whole time chain assembly as reported by Motoring file in May 2009:
http://www.motoringfile.com/2009/05/...d-start-issue/
It's 2 days engine out job according to my dealer. Now the engine runs with no rattle noise at all @ 27F, parked 10 hrs. The engine also runs as smooth as summer across the whole rev range.
